Marty Sheargold reveals he is four months sober as he breaks his silence on AFL Grand Final controversy

As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but admire Marty Sheargold‘s courage and honesty in sharing his personal journey towards sobriety. His life experiences, especially the AFL Grand Final incident, served as a powerful catalyst for him to reassess his relationship with alcohol and make positive changes.

Martin Sheargold recently disclosed that it’s been four months since he last indulged in alcohol, sharing this news following a period of keeping quiet about the AFL Grand Final scandal.

The Triple M host, 53, has spoken out about an incident at the 2023 AFL Grand Final for the first time, saying it was a catalyst for him to get ‘back on the wagon’.

At half-time, the radio personality is reported to have exited the game following accusations of making several disrespectful remarks towards fellow spectators during their shared viewing experience in a corporate suite.

Although earlier claims stated that he was asked to leave the MCC by security and these reports were later disputed by a Southern Cross Austereo representative, Marty is now saying he departed the premises voluntarily.

When talking to the Herald Sun, Marty shared that about four months prior to the alleged event, he was abstaining from alcohol. However, he unfortunately slipped up and started drinking again during the grand final.

He didn’t plan to offer any explanations, but the truth is, he had been abstaining from alcohol for approximately three to four months. However, his grand final day took a turn for the worse, and he found himself intoxicated rather rapidly.

Occasionally, life may lead you to believe you’re invincible, but a gentle nudge from someone serves as a reminder that we’re all vulnerable.

Occasionally, it’s important to recognize when the day should end – however, it’s undeniable that I behaved rather foolishly, and I can’t escape that fact.

After the occurrence, Marty temporarily stepped away from his Triple M breakfast program. He came back momentarily in January but later declared his departure from the show permanently in July, transferring to the network’s nationwide drive-time position instead.

In my own words, I’ve found myself reflecting anew on my complex feelings towards alcohol, following a recent event in the AFL. I’m proud to share that it’s been four months since I made the decision to abstain, starting from June.

He said it has taken him 53 years to realise that alcohol isn’t a ‘friend’ of his as he detailed his sobriety journey.

In July, Marty shared that he was stepping down from his Triple M radio program to devote more attention to his loved ones and focus on personal wellness, having taken a three-month break following the AFL event.

In his previous statement, he expressed that taking a long vacation towards the end of last year emphasized the value of investing in more meaningful moments with his loved ones.

Consequently, I’ve chosen to focus more on self-nurturing, aiming for a healthier work and personal life blend, which means I won’t be resuming my role on the Triple M Breakfast program anymore.

Nevertheless, I’ll carry on with my podcast, “The Marty Sheargold Show”, as well as my 3-4pm national broadcast on Triple M.

He continued: ‘I want to thank my immediate team and the network for their ongoing support and understanding.

1) Additionally, I want to express my gratitude to the audience for their unwavering devotion to not only our show but also the radio station. Just as they are, I continue to be a loyal fan of Triple M.

The Head of Content at SCA, Dave Cameron, stated: ‘SCA is in agreement with Marty’s choice to adjust his personal and professional obligations, and we’d like to express our gratitude to Marty and his team for crafting a one-of-a-kind, side-splitting Breakfast program for Melbourne since 2021.’
