As I read through this heartfelt tribute to George Negus, a legendary figure in Australian broadcasting, I can’t help but be reminded of the profound impact such individuals have on our lives. I had the privilege of growing up with Negus and his unique brand of journalism, and he left an indelible mark on my young mind.

Once more, Channel Ten has stumbled, causing embarrassment, after the passing of esteemed television journalist George Negus.

At 82 years old, the Australian broadcasting legend lost his life after a long struggle against Alzheimer’s, as reported by his family on Tuesday.

A wave of tributes poured in for the beloved 60 Minutes host, as each major network aired touching segments in honor of this media legend.

Nevertheless, Ten News First faced criticism after they misspelled the veteran presenter’s name in an online tribute. Instead of writing “Negus,” they used “Nebus.

After correcting the first gaffe, the network has now been criticised for yet another error.

In a heartfelt tribute video for their ex-employee, there was an unintentional mix-up where Ten inadvertently included clips of Paul Hogan portraying Negus through his comedic persona, George Fungus.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Ten for comment.

In a touching tribute, the 85-year-old actor who played Crocodile Dundee broke his silence about the passing of his dear friend.

In an exclusive conversation with Daily Mail Australia, Hogan shared the actual opinions that Negus held regarding Hogan’s well-known George Fungus cartoons.

He said Negus always saw the funny side of being at the centre of the skits, adding: ‘He loved me sending him up.’

Over those many years, the well-known Australian figure reminisced warmly about their lengthy bond of friendship that lasted over half a century.

‘George was a great old mate of mine for fifty years,’ he shared.

‘He will be missed. rest in peace, old friend.’

At their wedding in 1990, Negus was among the select group of friends who were close to Hogan when he married Linda Koslowski.

The wedding ceremony was held at a luxurious $2 million mansion in Byron Bay, which Hogan had purchased as a wedding present for his bride. This intimate event was kept highly confidential and private.

Approximately 100 close relatives and friends were present at the private event, and Negus was one of the chosen few who received an invitation, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Pictures snapped during the celebration revealed Negus beaming with pride while standing next to Hogan and Koslowski, sharing their joyous moment together.

Tributes have been flooding in for Negus since the sad news of his death emerged earlier this week.

Liz Hayes, a previous co-host on The Today Show, expressed moving sentiments towards the well-known newscaster during a live television interview.

On Tuesday, Liz expressed her admiration for the distinctive charm of the 9News personality, expressing warm sentiments during an appearance on A Current Affair.

George was an impactful individual who I’ll always remember. His influence was unmistakable, regardless of who he was or where he was.

Liz, who partnered with Negus on the Today Show from 1987 to 1990 at age 68, also mentioned that her previous colleague will be fondly remembered for his unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

She remarked, “He was exceptionally singular; there was just one George, and none other like him. In numerous ways, he was distinct.

‘He was just a good guy. Curious beyond belief, always had questions he wanted answered. He brought huge personality to television [and] an insatiable appetite to know more.’

Additionally present was Ian Leslie, a previous collaborator on 60 Minutes from Negus’ time there. He stated that it was Negus, the dynamic force, who truly brought the current affairs program to life.

‘We needed a stand out, we needed a spark to get the audience on side,’ he said.

We sought a leader, someone like an urban cowboy with a commanding voice. He was the catalyst who ignited a flame that eventually reached great heights over the course of an hour. In simpler terms, we required a charismatic figure, and George filled that role admirably.

Leslie added that seeing his former colleague struck down with Alzheimer’s disease was ‘cruel’.

He lamented, for a man whose essence lay in the power of words, in the joy of speaking, in the art of storytelling, and who considered his voice as his very life, losing that was an unimaginably harsh and deeply saddening experience.

Approximately five years back, Negus received a diagnosis of dementia. Since the end of 2021, he has resided in a nursing home located in Sydney’s northern region.

At the November 2020 memorial service honoring groundbreaking TV figure Gerald Stone, who passed away at the age of 87 and served as the first executive producer of 60 Minutes, Negus was last seen in a significant public gathering.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, it was confirmed that he passed away tranquilly, with cherished ones by his side, in Sydney.

Even though illnesses such as Alzheimer’s have brought difficulties upon our family, we’ve recently created moments filled with beauty, laughter, and joy together,” they expressed.

‘We also learnt a lot.’
