Sheamus should get one last big run

As a long-time WWE fan who’s seen my fair share of wrestling rings and storylines, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when I think about Sheamus. The man burst onto the scene like a whirlwind, the first Irish-born champ in just six months! His journey has been nothing short of remarkable, with three more world championships under his belt and a mid-card and tag team title picture that he’s kept vibrant even in his 40s.

Initially joining the WWE main roster in June 2009, Sheamus wasn’t your typical newcomer as he was already in his early thirties. Yet, unlike other superstars, Sheamus didn’t climb to the top gradually; instead, he launched himself into the spotlight by winning the WWE Championship, making him the first Irish-born champion, just six months after his debut.

Over the subsequent five years, he added another three world championship titles to his tally, with his brief stint as WWE champion in 2015 marking his last such reign. Following this, the WWE seemed to lessen its focus on Sheamus as a potential world title holder, but maintained his presence within the mid-card and tag team title scenes instead.

As fresh talent emerged, Sheamus found himself stepping aside to assist the newcomers, yet never shied away from delivering spectacular matches. Given that he’s currently 46 years old, his active wrestling career may be nearing its end, making this an opportune moment for WWE to consider a grand finale for The Celtic Warrior.

After WrestleMania 41, it seems like an ideal moment to re-establish Sheamus in the world title mix. Throughout John Cena’s career, Sheamus was one of his top rivals, and fans might get to witness a bout between them during Cena’s upcoming farewell tour. The WWE could leverage this opportunity to revitalize Sheamus as a headliner.

Some could argue WWE should consider Sheamus to dethrone Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship. But the chances of that happening are slim, as CM Punk, Ilja Dragunov, Bron Breakker, and even John Cena are already the rumored names in contention for that spot.

Triple H has faced criticism for allowing Bobby Lashley to join AEW and may face more scrutiny if he continues to prioritize new talent and keep experienced wrestlers like Sheamus out of major storylines. After his apparent resolution with Pete Dunne on Raw post Bad Blood, Sheamus is now competing for the WWE Speed Championship, a move that seems unnecessary given his career status. This mirrors the controversy surrounding Jeff Hardy chasing after the 24/7 Championship in WWE.

Sheamus’ latest chance to become a world champion was during the Elimination Chamber event in 2021, marking over eight years since he had a one-on-one title opportunity. Throughout these years, Sheamus has been a dedicated team member, following orders and delivering some of the toughest matches ever seen. Now, it’s WWE’s turn to acknowledge The Celtic Warrior’s unwavering loyalty and commitment by granting him one final shot as world champion before he retires and takes his place in the Hall of Fame.
