American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez episode 6: Paranoia sets in (Review

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in narrative-driven games like “Life is Strange” and “The Walking Dead,” I can confidently say that “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” has certainly made its mark as one of the most gripping and emotionally charged stories I’ve encountered. The series masterfully weaves a tale of fame, fortune, love, and tragedy, all while keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Looking in from the outside, it seems like Aaron (Josh Andrés Rivera) is living a dream come true – NFL success, financial abundance, and a loving partner like Shayanna (played by Jaylen Barron). However, despite these apparent blessings, Aaron’s life is far from content. Here’s the reason for his discontentment: His recent fame and wealth have actually made his life more difficult.

Spoilers ahead if you are not caught up on all six episodes of American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez. Go stream the latest episode on Hulu before reading on.

Title “Herald Street” in the sixth episode of Sports Story reveals the tipping point for Aaron. Previously, Shayanna had become wary of Aaron’s late-night activities. Unbeknownst to her, Aaron isn’t being unfaithful with a woman, but rather with another man. The episode portrays Aaron’s internal struggle with his secret life. For a moment, it seemed like he might tell Shayanna about it, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so. Instead, Aaron finds out that he is going to be a father. This news is both joyful and sad for Aaron because he isn’t in a situation where he can be a good father.

Chris strongly believed that his future lay with Aaron, and he had no intention of keeping their relationship secret indefinitely. However, it turned out that Aaron wasn’t on the same wavelength. Being a celebrity now, Aaron is rarely alone, constantly surrounded by fans and paparazzi. The scrutiny and attention everywhere he goes make it risky for him to be seen with anyone. As a result, Aaron’s anxiety and paranoia have reached unprecedented levels. These feelings, coupled with his anger and CTE, pose a significant challenge for him.

During the heart of the show, a combination of events paired with alcohol intensely upset Aaron. When someone at the club accidentally splashed a drink on him, Aaron perceived it as deliberate mockery, believing that the man and his companion, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, were ridiculing him. In truth, the spill was an accident, and nobody was laughing at them. Enraged, Aaron tracked them down outside of the club and ended up shooting both of them.

In a turn of events that initiates the series, Aaron conceals his car within his cousin Tanya’s garage. The sole eyewitness, Alexander ‘Sherrod’ Bradley (portrayed by Roland Buck III), vows to keep quiet about it. Despite seeming loyal, Aaron has reservations about trusting him completely. In a regrettable act, he shoots Sherrod, presumed dead at the time. The events leading up to this incident are portrayed in episode 6, though it doesn’t show the actual occurrence itself. Instead, it subtly suggests the impending chaos in Sports Story episode 7, where Aaron will face investigations for the murders.
