Al Pacino reveals the real reason he never got married as he opens up on 'years of hurt' in new memoir

As a dedicated follower of Al Pacino‘s illustrious career, I find his candid confessions about his relationships and marriage in his memoir, Sonny Boy, particularly intriguing. The Godfather actor, at 84, has had an impressive string of high-profile relationships throughout his career, but never tied the knot.

In his recently published memoir, Al Pacino discusses the reasons behind his avoidance of marriage, confessing that this choice led him to experience long-term pain.

As a devoted admirer, I’ve always been intrigued by the romantic journey of the esteemed actor from “The Godfather,” who, at 84 years old, has graced both the silver screen and headlines with an array of notable relationships spanning his illustrious career. Among these captivating partnerships were Diane Keaton, Jill Clayburgh, Penelope Ann Miller, Lyndall Hobbs, and Lucila Solá. However, despite these high-profile connections, he has chosen to remain a bachelor throughout his life.

In his autobiography titled “Sonny Boy,” Al expressed his firm opposition to the proposed alliance, as he believed it wouldn’t bring about any positive change.

However, there was a near instance where he considered popping the question to actress Kathleen Quinlan, who is now 69 years old, a former girlfriend and star of Apollo 13.

He penned, ‘Spending time with Kathleen felt almost like being married for me.’ However, I’ve consistently avoided the institution of marriage.

It seems like I didn’t foresee any benefits. I merely wished to steer clear of something that, in my view then, was a prelude to a continuous phase of suffering, which I referred to as the ‘pain train’.

He went on to add: ‘I thank God that Kathleen is still my friend to this day and I love her. But it wasn’t easy to say no to marriage with a woman I loved.

She had clear goals and achieved them, but unfortunately with another person. The pain lingered when she departed, and that wound has lasted for many years.

Al dated Kathleen for approximately two years from 1979 to 1981.

Following her previous relationship, she tied the knot with artist Warren Long in 1987. However, their union proved temporary, culminating in a divorce after several years had passed.

She then tied the knot with actor Bruce Abbott in 1994. They divorced in 2022.

Despite never marrying, Al has fathered four children from three different relationships.

He has a daughter named Julie Marie, aged 34, with acting coach Jan Tarrant, and two fraternal twins, Anton and Olivia, who are both 23 years old, with actress Beverly D’Angelo from National Lampoon’s Vacation.

In June 2023, at the age of 83, Al became a father for the first time, welcoming his son, Roman, with 30-year-old producer and executive Noor Alfallah.

During the month of August, as Noor moved about in Beverly Hills, someone inquired if she might contemplate marrying Al. To this question, she responded with a hint of uncertainty: “I’m not sure.

In November 2023, she stated that she didn’t plan to walk the aisle with the Academy Award winner, referring to herself as someone who doesn’t typically get married.

In a recent interview, Al said that becoming a parent later in life was no different to when he was in his younger years.

The octogenarian acting icon shared with People, “Things never change much,” or simply put, “It’s always the same scenario.” He added, “It’s amazing, really. That’s about all I can express.

I find it incredibly delightful to have kids. Personally, I adore this phase of my life. It has significantly improved me, if you will, in a positive manner.

‘It has a profound, lifelong impact on me. The notion of devoting your attention to individuals who are your offspring is where love truly manifests itself.’

Even though my romantic journey with Noor ended a while back, only a few months after our precious little one made his grand entrance into the world, I consider her not just as an ex, but as a cherished friend and dedicated co-parent. We’re still deeply connected, bound by the love we share for our son, and that bond will never fade.

After parting ways with Noor, she has gone out on numerous occasions with Bill Maher, the host of Real Time, who is 38 years older than her.

Penguin Press published Pacino’s first-ever memoir Sonny Boy on October 8.

During his rebellious teenage years at the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan (popularized by the 1980 movie “Fame” directed by Alan Parker), Al earned the nickname ‘Sonny’.

His memoir also details his time on the seat of Scarface and The Godfather, in which he played mobster Michael Corleone.

Although the movie could’ve earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, his fear of getting fired made him covertly wish for a set accident like an ankle injury that would allow him to leave the production discreetly.
