Lord of the Rings star Hugo Weaving has "absolutely no desires" to return as Elrond

As a long-time fan and avid gamer of The Lord of the Rings franchise, I can’t help but feel a bittersweet sense of nostalgia as we venture back into Middle-earth once more. With new series, movies, and projects on the horizon, it’s only natural for fans to wonder about the return of our beloved cast members.

The “Lord of the Rings” universe is still expanding and growing, with upcoming projects like Amazon Prime Video’s prequel series titled “The Rings of Power“, followed by “The War of the Rohirrim” later this year. Additionally, a new live-action film called “The Hunt for Gollum” is in development, directed by Andy Serkis who portrayed Gollum in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy.

The announcement of a new Lord of the Rings film has inevitably sparked curiosity among fans as to whether any of the original cast members will reprise their roles. There have been hints from some of the movie’s leading actors, like Viggo Mortensen, who has shown openness to returning to Middle-earth: “Sure, I don’t know all the details yet, I haven’t been briefed. Perhaps I’ll find out someday. I appreciate that character, I learned a lot from playing him, and I had a great time with it.” He shared this during an interview with GQ.

As a devoted fan, it brings me immense joy to share that the legendary Sir Ian McKellen himself has expressed his readiness to reprise the role of Gandalf, provided he’s still among the living. In his own words, during an interview with The Times, he said, “If I’m still around…

This discussion now leads us to Hugo Weaving, the latest actor questioned about reprising his character. Unlike Viggo Mortensen and Ian McKellen who express eagerness to return to Middle-earth, Weaving appears less inclined. He’s portrayed the noble elf Elrond in six movies spanning the series, and he feels his time in Middle-earth has come to an end.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, Weaving expressed his feelings by saying, “I’ve reached my limit with that,” referring to Middle-earth. “Working in New Zealand on and off for a decade was wonderful. However, after the project named Mortal Engines, which was supposed to be their next major franchise but ultimately failed, I believe I’ve had enough of Middle-earth, and I doubt anyone would ask me to revisit it.

He pointed out that it didn’t align with Elrond’s eternal nature for him to return, as his aging would be incongruous since Elrond is immortal.

“Elrond is meant to be immortal and I’m aging. Elrond is one of the few characters, I think there’s only three or four of them, who spans through The Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. But even when we went back to reshoot certain parts of Lord of the Rings, I was aware I was older than I was before. And shooting stuff on The Hobbit was starting to get slightly silly. I loved being a part of that franchise but I have absolutely no plans or desires to be a part of it anymore.”

As an ardent fan, I’m convinced that digital de-aging techniques could potentially aid in maintaining Elrond’s eternal status within the world of Middle Earth. Nevertheless, with six magnificent performances under his belt, Hugo Weaving more than deserves a well-earned break.

The movie titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” hasn’t been given a specific release date yet, but it’s anticipated to appear in cinemas around the year 2026. Meanwhile, the fourth season of Hugo Weaving’s current project, “Slow Horses,” is now available!
