Hairy Bikers’ Si King breaks his silence on late friend Dave Myers’ heartbreaking final wish

Hairy Bikers' Si King breaks his silence on late friend Dave Myers' heartbreaking final wish

As a long-time admirer and follower of Si King and his remarkable journey with Dave Myers, popularly known as the Hairy Bikers, I find myself deeply moved by Si’s heartfelt words following the loss of his dear friend. Having spent two decades creating memories, cooking shows, books, and live appearances together, their bond was truly unique.

According to King, he disclosed the wishes that Dave Myers would have had for Simon after his passing due to cancer.

Dave, who is widely recognized as one-half of the duo known as The Hairy Bikers, tragically passed away at the age of 66 in February. His longtime partner Si was by his side during this time, having stood by him throughout a prolonged struggle against cancer.

As a seasoned lifestyle guru with over two decades of collaboration under my belt, I’ve had the pleasure of working side by side with a fellow enthusiast, Dave, on numerous beloved culinary television productions, literary projects, and live events. Our partnership has been nothing short of magical, bringing joy to countless households worldwide.

During an interview with The Sunday Times, Si openly shared that he’s been grappling with hardships following the passing of his dear friend.

Occasionally, he’s been tempted to jump on his bicycle and ride off into the horizon, but he realizes that wasn’t Dave’s wish.

He said: ‘The answer is I am going to take some time to reflect on the life I had with my best mate, and think about moving forwards. Which is exactly what Dave would have wanted. Move forward, don’t dwell on the past..’

Additionally, he too remembered the challenges faced during the production of the last season of The Hairy Bikers by both him and the team.

He said: ‘[Dave] wanted to travel up and down the west coast of the UK — an area he loved and where he’d been born. Oh God, that last series was by the far the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do in my entire life.

The team also experienced it; some of them had been with us from the beginning. We all were attempting to maintain our regular routine, striving hard not to break down.

In 1992, they crossed paths, and Si remarked that their bond was solidified through a shared meal consisting of tandoori chicken masala, four poppadoms, and three pints of beer.

In 2004, their initial joint television appearance was on “The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook,” a show that combined elements of cooking and travel. In this debut episode, the pair embarked on a journey by motorbike, traversing the entire length of Portugal.

In June, Si announced that the Hairy Bikers brand is over following the tragic passing of Dave.

He said it wouldn’t be ‘respectful’ for him to continue as the Hairy Bikers on his own.

Regarding his future plans, Si shared with The Guardian that it won’t be a replica of The Hairy Bikers version 2.0. He emphasized that such a move wouldn’t be appropriate or respectful.

The TV cook went on to say, “Indeed, we are experiencing transformation, and with every transition, there is a price to pay. And unfortunately, that price has been my closest companion.

“My friend Dave was remarkable because he fully appreciated every moment. Sometimes he drove me up the wall, and I’d ask him to voice some criticism occasionally, but he always seemed to enjoy his role as one of the Hairy Bikers.

Dave and I were quite distinct individuals, each pursuing unique goals and values, yet our feelings for each other ran deep. Our approach to decisions was simple: if either of us strongly objected to an action, then we wouldn’t proceed with it.

However, Dave was often eager to agree, far more so than myself. On numerous occasions, his unyielding optimism would carry the day.

Previously in June, a group of motorcyclists were guided by the late stars’ wife to Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, following their journey from London. This ride was organized as a tribute to the beloved television personality.

Multitudes of individuals stood along the roadsides, erupting in applause, as Si guided a solemn convoy of motorcyclists, spanning thirty-six miles, towards the city center, mere hours after departing from the Ace Café in London.

Previously, Dave’s wife Lili commended the initiatives of other motorcycle riders as they surpassed their fundraising goals for cancer and child-focused nonprofit organizations.

Jason “Woody” Woodcock, the orchestrator of the Dave Day ride from London to Barrow, mentioned that as many as 30,000 cyclists might have taken part in the final stretch.

He said: ‘Everybody said it couldn’t be done. We would never be able to move all those people and keep to time. Yet we did it and not a minute late.

I’m feeling both exhausted emotionally yet incredibly joyful. Despite my state, I managed to assemble a couple of bicycles for Dave, which I had pledged to do. Thanks to the generous help from the bike community and the folks in Barrow, we were able to get this task done.

‘It is amazing what can be done when people come together. The politicians should take note.’
