We seriously missed out on Noah Hawley’s Star Trek
As a lifelong Star Trek fan who has witnessed the ebb and flow of this iconic franchise, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the loss of Noah Hawley’s proposed film. Having lived through the tumultuous times of the Kelvin timeline reboot, I must admit that the prospect of fresh blood steering the Enterprise was invigorating.
Star Trek was on the brink of achieving something extraordinary under Noah Hawley’s leadership. After the disappointments with Star Trek: Beyond, Hawley was given the opportunity to develop a new Star Trek movie. Things appeared to be progressing smoothly, but eventually, executives at Paramount expressed concerns about the “unconventional” nature of his concept and decided to take the project away from him.
Despite some lingering doubts about the plot of the movie, there were whispers suggesting it would introduce an entirely new set of characters. Convincing audiences might have been challenging enough, but he also had to hurdle over the alleged narrative, which suggested a virus that spread within the Federation, carving its path through it.
Given the timing, which was either before, during, or immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic, that aspect made it a difficult proposition to grasp. The narrative left many questioning if Hawley was the appropriate choice for the role. Despite our lingering query, any figure would seem more promising following years of JJ Abrams and Alex Kurtzman.
Nevertheless, the concept proved challenging to promote. However, when we learned about Hawley’s potential cast if his film had succeeded – Cate Blanchett and Rami Malek – it became clear that he had secured one of the most talented duos. Regardless of whether they were portraying the captain and commander, a hero or a villain, or romantic partners, securing these two stars would have been a significant coup for the franchise.
Malek’s diverse portrayal of characters has left fans spellbound, whereas Blanchett delivers monologues as effectively as anyone in the acting industry.
The concept for the canceled movie didn’t exactly blow us away, but given Hawley’s talent for attracting high-profile stars, we can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at what might have been. If he could secure those two big names, he probably would have had an all-star cast for his film. Since the story is completely new and there are no recurring characters, that kind of star power would be crucial. Some of the most talented actors and actresses in Hollywood were eager to bring a fresh story and unique characters to the screen.
