Star Trek: Lower Decks star cried when she saw her name in the Star Trek font
As a lifelong Trekkie who’s grown up with the franchise, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of awe and gratitude for Gabrielle Ruiz’s journey. From her humble beginnings as an ensemble player to stepping into the sturdy boots of T’Lyn, she’s not only lived out my childhood dreams but surpassed them.
Upon landing the role of T’Lyn in Star Trek: Lower Decks, Gabrielle Ruiz wasn’t just thrilled; she was overwhelmed with emotion. Before this character, she had minor roles as Ensign Lamont, a computer voice, and Castro. Although these were small parts, they still represented her involvement in the Star Trek universe. In an interview with Star Trek: Explorer’s John Kirk, Ruiz shared that she couldn’t express how much she wept when she saw her name displayed in the iconic Star Trek font. Her affection for Star Trek wasn’t just personal; her family are avid Trekkies as well, with Ruiz herself referring to herself as a “native Trekkie,” even calling her mother a “dedicated Trekkie.
Playing the role of T’Lyn, the stoic Vulcan on the Cerritos, brought immense joy to her actor. This was particularly true because she felt it was important to pay tribute to Spock and the subsequent generations. It seems that Ruiz’s obvious enthusiasm for the character may be why fans have grown so fond of her, adoring her portrayal.
I can’t express how much I cried. I mean, when I saw my name in the Star Trek font-I lost it.
Beyond portraying a beloved character in the Star Trek series, Ruiz recognizes the profound impact it has had on her family. As an actor, I struggle to conceive of a more gratifying experience.
Star Trek: Lower Decks is set to conclude its fifth and last season in December this year, but who knows, we might not have heard the end of our beloved characters like T’Lyn. Just like Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid), a live-action crossover could be a hit for them. Here’s hoping we get to explore more of T’Lyn’s story in the future.
