The chilling air outside mirrors the goosebumps that are forming on my arms in response to this week’s horror releases.
Is it hard to believe that Halloween is almost upon us? It seems like only yesterday when October began, and now we’re more than halfway through! However, fear not, as there’s a plethora of horror movies and TV shows being released to keep the scary vibes going strong until the end of the month.
Hey there, fellow gamers! This week, I’m super pumped about the theater release of the long-awaited sequel to Smile, and if that’s not enough, Woman of the Hour, the talk-of-the-town crime thriller, is dropping on Netflix. For those who prefer TV over gaming sessions, Peacock has Hysteria! waiting for you, while new episodes of American Horror Stories are gracing our screens on Hulu. So, grab some popcorn and get ready for an entertaining week starting October 14th!
Smile 2 (Theaters, Oct. 18)
Parker Finn is back with his new movie, following up on the 2022 film inspired by his short story “Laura Hasn’t Slept“. In the much-awaited sequel, Naomi Scott takes the lead as renowned pop star Skye Riley. After experiencing a distressing event, Skye finds herself targeted by the malevolent presence and must confront her hidden demons before the situation spirals out of control.
Woman of the Hour (Netflix, Oct. 18)
Anna Kendrick takes on her first directorial role in an upcoming movie based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, who became notorious for appearing on the 1978 dating show The Dating Game. Besides directing, Kendrick also acts as Cheryl Bradshaw, the lady who unwittingly went out with Rodney without knowing he had already taken five women’s lives when they first met. Netflix secured the film following its premiere at TIFF this year.
Hysteria! (Peacock, Oct. 18)
Three captivating actors – Julie Bowen, Anna Camp, and Bruce Campbell – make this fresh and pertinent ’80s-inspired horror series on Peacock a must-watch this week. It offers a distinct perspective on the Satanic hysteria that haunted numerous small towns during the 1980s.
The story commences with a shocking initial scene that lays the foundation for the plot: someone is abducting and slaying individuals. The ensuing panic erupts after a renowned high school football quarterback is slain. In search of recognition, a rock band from their high school feigns involvement in Satanism to boost their reputation, leading the town to suspect them as more bizarre occurrences unfold.
MadS (Shudder, Oct. 18)
A single-shot horror movie, MadS, appears to be an enthralling and avant-garde film offering a unique perspective on a high school graduate dabbling with a novel substance before a night of revelry. However, as soon as he consumes the drug, events begin to unravel and take on progressively bizarre and disorienting turns.
American Horror Stories (Hulu, Oct. 15)
This week, the spin-off of the widely recognized series American Horror Story, which presents a unique cast and plot in each episode instead of per season, is premiering five new episodes on Hulu for “Huluween.” Among the stars appearing in this fresh batch are Victor Garber, Debby Ryan, Henry Winkler, and others.
