The new BBC drama, Babies, premieres tonight. The six-episode series is from Stefan Golaszewski, the two-time BAFTA-winning creator of Marriage, which featured Sean Bean and Nicola Walker. The BBC has called the show “gripping.”
The new series, Babies, follows Lisa (Siobhán Cullen, known from Bodkin) and Stephen (Paapa Essiedu, recently in the BBC thriller The Capture), a couple dealing with the pain of losing a pregnancy. The show explores how their dream of having a family is challenged, but ultimately highlights the strength of their relationship through moments of humor, warmth, and dedication to each other.
Charlotte Riley (known for The Peripheral) and Jack Bannon (Pulse) join the cast as Amanda and Dave, a couple facing difficulties of their own. Their struggles will put a strain on the friendship between Dave and Stephen.
Initial reactions to the new drama Babies have been very positive. Metro gave it a four-star review, calling it “essential viewing” and praising its honest, and sometimes difficult, portrayal of its subject matter. Despite being occasionally uncomfortable to watch, the publication also noted that the series is full of “hope and humour”.
According to Radio Times, the show Babies is incredibly relatable, tackling its difficult subjects with honesty and a raw, uncompromising approach.

Golaszewski explained that there’s a special connection when something you create ends up being enjoyed in people’s homes. He intentionally chose to tell this story in a hopeful way, saying he wasn’t sure a darker approach would offer any benefit. Ultimately, he wants viewers to feel more optimistic after watching his work.
