Friends of actress Alea O’Shea have raised more than $80,000 on GoFundMe to support her battle with brain cancer.
A fundraiser is underway to help the social media personality who was diagnosed with an illness last year. They’re hoping to raise $90,000, and donations are increasing each day.
For the past several months, Alea has been courageously battling brain cancer and undergoing treatment, according to event organizer Lauren Newton.
She had another surgery last week as she continues to battle her illness. Despite remaining incredibly brave, it’s been a very difficult time for Alea and her family, she shared.
I’ve been getting so many messages from people asking how they can support Alea, and it’s incredibly heartwarming! So, we’ve set up this space as a way for friends, family, and anyone in the community who wants to help ease the financial burden of her medical treatments and related costs. Every little bit truly makes a difference, and we appreciate all the kindness and support.
The GoFundMe had an initial goal of $80,000, but that was raised when it was reached on Monday.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Alea’s journey with admiration. Many of you may recognize her as Darcy from Home and Away – she played that role from 2011 to 2014, and then again from 2016 to 2017. Recently, she’s been bravely sharing her experience with hair loss, which is a side effect of the radiation therapy she’s undergoing as she fights her illness. It’s so inspiring to see her openness and vulnerability through this challenging time.
The star first revealed she had been diagnosed with brain cancer in December.
She announced to her 300,000 followers that the last few weeks have been incredibly busy and chaotic.
Despite being understandably upset by her recent diagnosis, she assured her fans she would share her experiences openly as she begins treatment.
‘This is a video I obviously thought I’d never have to make, but I’ve recently been diagnosed with brain cancer,’ she began.
‘Saying that like, a hook, is insane. It’s been a crazy few weeks.’
Alea shared that she had a biopsy done on her birthday and has been anxiously awaiting the results ever since, feeling uncertain about what they might be.
‘Now that I finally have some clarity, I just want to share what’s going on.
I’ve decided to share what’s happening openly online because I want to maintain a sense of normalcy in my life while dealing with this challenge.
I’ve been following Alea’s story, and it’s heartbreaking. She says it all started about six weeks ago with little things she didn’t even think twice about at first – things she just dismissed as nothing. It’s so easy to overlook those early signs, isn’t it?
She explained that she’d noticed her smile was slightly crooked and that it was becoming difficult to speak clearly.
‘I had a few migraines, but nothing scary.’
However things escalated rapidly while she was recently in the United States working.
She explained that while she was in Los Angeles, she lost feeling in two fingers, and that numbness spread to her wrist and then to her toe.
Initially, Alea thought she had a simple injury, like a pinched nerve, and decided to see her physiotherapist to get it looked at.
He quickly understood the situation was too complex for him to handle, so he asked for a brain scan. That’s when they discovered the problem.
The actress is now encouraging people to listen to their intuition when something doesn’t feel right with their health, and to be assertive when asking doctors for the care they need.
If something doesn’t feel quite right, even in a small way, trust your instincts and seek help from qualified professionals who will listen to your concerns.
Even after receiving the news, Alea confirmed she can still walk and move around, although the left side of her body is weaker and might continue to weaken before it improves.
‘Can I flip you off? No. Thumbs up? No. Or hold things? No,’ she joked.
The good news is the location of this in my brain won’t change who I am. I’ll still be my funny, talkative self.
Following her surgery, doctors have cautioned her about possible problems, including hair loss and potential weakness or paralysis on the left side of her body. They explained that they’ll need to monitor her progress closely and adjust treatment as needed.
She explained that she might be filming videos using only one hand in the near future. She also mentioned she may need to take breaks when necessary, but generally plans to continue being herself and creating content as often as possible.
Even after receiving a difficult diagnosis, Alea shared with her fans that she feels incredibly grateful for all the support she’s receiving.
She also thanked her long-time followers for sticking by her.
To all of you who’ve been following along – seriously, thank you! I so appreciate your support throughout everything, and I’m especially grateful you’ve stuck with me through this recent phase. It means the world to me.
But Alea stressed the diagnosis will not define her, nor become her ‘whole personality’.
‘It’s just another part of my story, ‘ she concluded in one of her clips.
Honestly, just knowing that maybe, maybe my sharing this could help someone else feeling the same way… that’s everything to me. It’s like, if it makes even one person feel a little better while I’m working through things myself, then I’m good. Seriously, that’s all I could ever ask for.
