NASCAR will have a new points leader after Charlotte Roval race
As a die-hard NASCAR fan with years of racing under my belt (metaphorically speaking, of course), I can’t help but feel a sense of admiration for William Byron and his consistent performance this season. With two impressive finishes at Kansas Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, he’s clinched a spot in the round of 8 for the second consecutive year without even needing to win a race! That’s no small feat, especially considering the high-stakes competition in NASCAR.
In simple terms, William Byon from Hendrick Motorsports secured a place in the next round (round of 8) of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs for the second year in a row without having to win any race during the round of 12, thanks to his runner-up position at Kansas Speedway and third place at Talladega Superspeedway.
In this round of four events and ten races, Byron is the lone driver who has secured a spot in the semifinals since neither of the initial two races were won by drivers in the playoffs. First, Ross Chastain from Trackhouse Racing Team triumphed at Kansas, followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr., representing JTG Daugherty Racing, who emerged victorious at Talladega.
Byron currently holds a secure position in the playoffs since he leads Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott by 61 points, who is ranked eighth in the playoff standings.
The significance of the distance to eighth place instead of ninth lies in considering the potential for a driver below the cut line to win during Sunday’s round 12 finale at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval. It’s worth noting that any driver, without winning, can only accumulate up to 55 points in this 109-lap race on the 17-turn, 2.28-mile (3.669-kilometer) track located in Concord, North Carolina.
But even with a win on Sunday, Byron will not lead the standings to start the round of 8.
Byron currently holds the top position in the standings, maintaining a 17-point advantage over Christopher Bell from Joe Gibbs Racing. This season, he has accumulated the fourth highest number of playoff points among all drivers, with a total of 23. His teammate Kyle Larson leads with 47 points, followed by Bell with 32 and Tyler Reddick from 23XI Racing with 28 points.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, even if I manage to pull off a win this Sunday, I’ll only rack up 28 (or potentially 30 if I win both stages) playoff points. That means I’d be starting the next round with a maximum of 4,030 total points under my belt.
Bell and Larson haven’t secured their spot in the quarterfinals yet, but they are currently the drivers with the highest rankings who haven’t made it there. Bell is 57 points ahead of the qualifying line (currently held by Joey Logano from Team Penske in ninth place), while Larson is 52 points clear.
In simpler terms, neither of them can finish behind seven other drivers without an unexpected winner, because even if there is an underdog victor from below the qualifying line, their gaps to the cutoff would only shrink to 44 and 39 respectively. However, considering that it’s not just the driver in eighth place who needs to overtake them, it seems extremely unlikely for this situation to occur.
Bell maintains a substantial lead over teammate Hamlin by 27 points, over Bowman by 31 points, Blaney by 32 points, and Reddick by 43 points. On the other hand, Larson edges Hamlin by 22 points, Bowman by 26 points, Blaney by 27 points, and Reddick by 38 points.
For Byron, the objective this coming Sunday is clear-cut. Aim to accumulate as many playoff points as feasible, since these will influence the number of points he begins with in the round of 8. However, he won’t achieve this by maintaining his current position: at the top.
Should Larson progress, he’ll lead the quarterfinals, as just seven playoff points are up for grabs this Sunday afternoon, and he currently holds 15 more points than any other competitor. On the flip side, if Larson fails to advance, that top spot essentially goes to Bell.
