Aussie music icon reveals why he suddenly quit music and worked for the local council after his popular 70s band broke up
As a dedicated follower and admirer of Australian music icons, I can’t help but be inspired by Daryl Braithwaite’s remarkable journey. The man who soared to fame with Sherbet and scored countless hits has shown us the true meaning of resilience and reinvention.
Legendary Australian musician Daryl Braithwaite attained massive popularity and recorded numerous chart-topping songs as part of the renowned group, Sherbet.
However, following their disbandment in 1984, the well-known 70s band left Daryl, aged 75, feeling compelled to distance himself from music. He’s recently shared his reasons for stepping away from the spotlight briefly.
Initially pursuing a solo career in music, the singer later resorted to receiving unemployment benefits and took up a regular job as a laborer for the city council, working on roads.
He shared that it was disappointing for him to attempt booking performances at clubs, now that he’s no longer with Tony Mitchell, Garth Porter, Alan Sandow, and Clive Shakespeare in the band.
Speaking to the Courier Mail, Daryl said, “During the break, I felt it wasn’t suitable for me to engage in club performances or collaborate musically with others who might have expected such services. So, I decided to step back.
After taking a step back from fame and starting a job at the local council, he found his passion for music once more, leading him to grab the microphone again.
He shared that his inspiration to return to playing music stemmed from not engaging in singing and being unemployed, instead taking on manual labor jobs.
‘And then, finally, I started probably thinking to myself, ”this is really buggered”.’
Daryl eventually made his big music comeback in 1988 with his number one album Edge.
In 1991, he achieved success again with the single “The Horses”, which was a cover of the Rickie Lee Jones song that was originally recorded in 1989.)
Currently, the seasoned artist shows no signs of retiring imminently and continues to enjoy performing songs with gusto.
He recounted to Daily Mail Australia, “It’s just like the beginning. A sensation stirs me, and I feel compelled by it. That feeling is etched in my memory from when I was 10, 12, 15 years old.
‘The same applies now. If you’re not passionate about it, you wouldn’t do it.’
Though he doesn’t particularly enjoy the recording phase, Daryl finds live shows exhilarating.
He finds the immediacy of live interactions captivating. There’s an immediate connection with people, and the unpredictable nature – whether it succeeds or not – keeps him enthralled, and this thrill never fades.
Regarding his famous song “The Horses,” Daryl mentioned that he continues to enjoy performing it even after over three decades have passed.
He expressed that he never grows weary of performing the song. Over time, it has become extremely well-liked, and its ability to resonate strongly with people continues to astound him,” he stated.
‘We played it last weekend up in Parkes to about 7,000 people, and they sang it like there was no tomorrow. It’s not over yet, that’s for sure.’
Daryl mentioned that playing the hit song with global pop sensation Harry Styles during his Australian tour in 2023 represented the pinnacle of his career.
‘It was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it when I got the call,’ he recalled.
Harry is an incredibly famous performer, and the chance to sing alongside him felt unbelievable. In the days leading up, I often wondered if it was all just a dream. But when we finally took the stage together, it was an amazing experience,” he excitedly shared.
Daryl first rose to fame in the 1970s as the frontman for popular Aussie pop group Sherbet.
Established back in 1969, this band produced several top-charting Australian songs such as “Summer Love” (released in 1975) and “Howzat” (in 1976), which reached the number one spot.
In the 80s, after undergoing several band member changes, they transformed into The Sherbs and achieved another success with their song “I Have the Skill” in 1981.
During his tenure with Sherbet, Daryl simultaneously embarked on a solo journey, achieving numerous number-one hits. Among these were “You’re My World” (1973), “Calvary” (1975), and “Old Sid” (1976).
In 2017, Daryl was honoured by the music business when he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
