Gene Roddenberry couldn’t get work after Star Trek: The Original Series was cancelled

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vast Star Trek universe, I can’t help but feel a deep admiration for Gene Roddenberry, the visionary behind this iconic franchise. His journey, marked by hardships and stereotypes, is a testament to the indomitable spirit of creativity and resilience that lies within us all.

William Shatner, known for his role in Star Trek: The Original Series, has shared experiences about the difficulties he faced following the show’s cancellation. Similarly, Walter Koenig mentioned that opportunities didn’t come his way afterward. However, as Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross noted in their book, The Fifty-Year Mission The First 25 Years, Gene Roddenberry had earlier expressed that the series finale had far-reaching effects, not just for the actors but for the entire Star Trek universe.

Following the termination of the series, Roddenberry openly confessed that he encountered challenging periods. He felt disheartened as his aspirations seemed to be dwindling due to his inability to secure new projects. Although he had previously dabbled in genres other than science fiction prior to The Original Series’ premiere, he was primarily recognized as a “science fiction” writer, which made it difficult for him to find work in other areas.

Roddenberry addressed passionate followers in various colleges, and on occasion, he expressed gratitude for the few hundred dollars they generously gave him as payment. Occasionally, he found himself struggling to meet his mortgage payments, which led him to ponder his next move.

I was stereotyped as a science fiction write, and sometimes, it was tough to pay the mortgage. They said ‘you’re a science fiction type.’ I said ‘hey, wait a minute. I used to write westerns. I wrote police stories,’ and they said, ‘no, now you’re science fiction.’ I don’t feel bitter about that.

Reflecting on Gene Roddenberry’s achievements today – spanning over 930 Star Trek episodes, 13 movies, games, merchandise, and more – it’s hard to imagine the challenges he faced initially. However, he was often typecast. Luckily, he persisted with writing science fiction, a decision that proved fruitful. Although Roddenberry encountered difficulties following The Original Series, he didn’t harbor resentment. Instead, he saw it as just the nature of Hollywood.
