Amazon sounds bullish on The Rings of Power season 3 (but there's still no announcement)

As a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan with more years under my belt than I care to admit, I’ve been through the highs and lows of Middle Earth storytelling like no other. From the exhilarating triumph of Frodo scaling Mount Doom to the heart-wrenching sorrow of Samwise saying goodbye to his dear friend, I’ve felt it all. So when it comes to Amazon Prime Video’s The Rings of Power prequel show, my expectations are sky-high.

How can a fan secure some insight regarding the future of the series? The second installment of Amazon Prime Video’s lavishly budgeted Lord of the Rings prequel show, titled The Rings of Power , concluded last week, and yet, there has been no official confirmation about a third season. This is surprising, given that cast and crew members have hinted at “positive updates” to come soon.

It’s only been a short while since season 2 wrapped up, but given how meticulously shows like The Rings of Power are produced, an early confirmation for a third season would certainly delight fans who don’t relish long breaks between seasons. During an interview with Variety, Amazon executive Jennifer Salke expressed optimism about the show’s future, though she didn’t explicitly confirm that The Rings of Power has been renewed for a third season.

Approximately 55 million people have interacted with the series since its second season debut, according to Salke. When considering the overall trend, which is how this company views such an asset, this investment in the franchise is seen as long-term. In fact, more than 150 million viewers are tuning in and participating with the show. This makes us all quite optimistic about its future.

We’ll continue to make the show as long as we see global customers loving it and watching it…it is a business. Obviously, we need a large amount of people showing up. And there are a large amount of people, so there’s no debate about whether or not the show will continue.

Absolutely, there’s no question about it – we can all agree that the series will indeed carry on for a third season, correct?

It appears Salke might be being cautious in his statements, possibly because the team behind “The Rings of Power” are finalizing their plans and the executives prefer not to discuss season 3 until everything is set. However, considering how “The Rings of Power” has been a moderate success rather than a massive hit, it’s reasonable to assume that if it had been a blockbuster show, we would have heard about season 3 by now.

Salke subtly suggested that some plans are underway regarding “The Rings of Power.” For example, she stated there are no current plans to shift production outside of the UK, implying possibly the third season will be filmed in the UK, hinting at its continuation. Additionally, she alluded to potential talks about Amazon acquiring Embracer Group, a company owning significant Tolkien intellectual property, without providing concrete promises. In essence, there are some promising signs, but no definite commitments have been made yet.
