Target hopes shoppers will follow the yellow brick road to their "Wicked" merchandise this year

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for musicals and a soft spot for anything fantastical, I must say that Target has truly outdone itself this time! The upcoming “Wicked” film adaptation is already making waves, and to see Target at the forefront of merchandising tie-ins is nothing short of enchanting.

There’s no doubt that the upcoming film version of “Wicked” is set to leave a lasting impression on us all this November, and businesses are already jumping on the bandwagon. Since its debut in 2003, theatergoers have been able to pick up merchandise ranging from magnets to Shiz University t-shirts during the shows. However, with the movie’s release just around the corner, finding related goods will be a breeze. A particular retailer has stood out for collaborations.

“There’s no place like Target.”

As per a press release on October 3rd, the store is set to offer an extensive range of merchandise that is exclusive to them. This collection features an adult and children’s clothing line designed by the acclaimed costume designer for the film, Paul Tazewell. There are approximately 150 items scheduled for release, with nearly 70% of these items being available exclusively at Target.

Currently, there are outfits and costumes available for you to don during the spooky season traditionally associated with witches. The store already stocks Wicked Halloween costumes for fans who love witches. You’ll find a variety of dress-up sets or children’s costumes for Glinda in two distinct styles, while Elphaba’s Black Defying Gravity Dress Up Set is inspired by the climactic scene from the first movie. For adults, there are deluxe costumes that offer a more casual take; Glinda’s outfit includes a shorter version of her bubble dress, a tiara, and a black cape over a purple one, while Elphaba’s ensemble consists of her famous hat, a short black cape, and a black dress. There will also be less formal versions of these elaborate items for everyday wear, such as role-play wands, crowns, capes, totes, journals, and more.

LEGO sets are also offered for iconic locations from the story of ‘Wicked’, including the Emerald City and the witches’ dormitory. Additionally, Mattel has introduced singing dolls and fashion dolls for Elphaba’s sister Nessarose and the charming Fiyero. A set of four from Fisher-Price Little People includes Glinda, Madame Morrible, the Wizard, and the grounded Elphaba, who stands firm on her belief that everyone should have the opportunity to soar.

Moving beyond just movie costume and toy merchandise, there are related products launching on October 13, like the Stanley Quencher Tumblers, as well as OPI nail polishes and r.e.m. beauty items that have been inspired by the film.

For people who find themselves constantly humming tunes from the musical, exclusive vinyl soundtracks and a Bluetooth Karaoke Machine branded as “Wicked” will be available only at Target stores.

“Come with me to the Emerald City.”

As a gamer, I can hardly wait for the upcoming immersion into a magical shopping experience! They say that when this launch drops on November 3rd, I’ll be stepping right into the captivating world of Oz. The stores will have special “Oz-themed shop-in-shops,” complete with a dedicated area to explore the collection, all inspired by the iconic scenes and characters from the movie. It’s going to feel like I’ve been transported to the magical land of Oz itself!

On November 15, Jersey City will be the epicenter of excitement.

The retailer will transform its Jersey City, New Jersey store into the Land of Oz with installations, embroidery stations,, photo opportunities, giveaways and specialty baskets – all accompanied by a shopping guide handout in the Emerald City’s art deco style that guests can pick up when they walk into stores.

Target press release

On the 23rd and 24th of November, special events are taking place at Target stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Seattle. These unique events are themed and will offer attractions like candy stations and freebies.

On October 20th, there will be a marketing event spotlighting Cynthia Erivo, famed for her portrayal of Elphaba. During this occasion, she and her guests will perform an enchanting rendition of her iconic “Defying Gravity” melody, accompanied by delightful surprises that underscore Target as a joyful haven reminiscent of Oz.

There’s no need to wait till November 22; let the excitement build, as we eagerly anticipate further announcements about Wicked.
