EastEnders fans left stunned as iconic 90s star Joe Wicks makes a surprise return to the soap after 27 YEARS
As a seasoned EastEnders fan with over two decades of witnessing the turbulent lives of Walford residents, I must say that this latest plot twist involving David French is reminiscent of a classic soap opera drama. The tension between David and Cindy, the secret granddaughter, and the potential reunion with his estranged son Joe, all while trying to keep up appearances – it’s a rollercoaster ride that I can’t help but be hooked on.
On Thursday, fans of EastEnders found it difficult to conceal their shock when Paul Nicholls unexpectedly reappeared on Albert Square.
The actor, 45, reprised his nineties role as Joe Wicks after nearly 27 years away from the soap.
Regrettably, Paul’s character, Joe, wasn’t physically present in the square; he merely made a brief appearance for a video conversation with his father, David Wicks (played by Michael French).
Following the airing of the episode, enthusiastic viewers flocked to what was once known as Twitter, to vocalize their astonishment and commend the BBC series for reintroducing a long-time cast member.

It’s a pleasure to see familiar characters like David Wicks, Joe Wicks, Jake Moon, and Jane Beale making comebacks for brief appearances as we approach the 40th anniversary of EastEnders.
The episode picked up on the aftermath of David’s return to Walford after receiving a concerning call from Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace).
David learned from Kat that she was concerned about her friend, Bianca (Patsy Palmer), because she had shown unusual behavior over a long period of time.
David found himself quite busy during the past week, as he was keeping a secret concerning a woman named Holly, whose connection to Nicholls’ character was eventually revealed to the audience.
He received text messages and calls from Holly but refused to tell anyone who she was.
David, intending to depart from Walford, found himself obliged to remain for some additional time following his unexpected discovery of Cindy (Michelle Collins) and Junior (Micah Balfour) passionately kissing in the shadowy corner of the pub.
In the heart of Beale’s Eels, my encounter with Cindy stirred up echoes from our shared past, reminding me vividly of times gone by.
Cindy thought that David’s actions were just as wrong as hers, considering they had been unfaithful to each other and had also deceived Adam Woodyatt in the past.
The dialogue ceased as David departed from the eatery, eager to unveil Cindy’s infidelity at the nearby tavern.
Upon entering, David found his attention drawn away by Ian who mentioned moving beyond the past and focusing on what lies ahead in the future.
Afterward, David encouraged Cindy to focus on her connection with Ian, and they exchanged a goodbye kiss. But just as David left Albert Square again, his phone called, and the voice on the other end was Holly’s.
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but wonder if my idol, David, was indeed going to drop by before my graduation.
After Holly brought up her father, she handed the phone to David’s son, Joe Wicks (Paul Nicholls), thereby making it clear that Holly is indeed David’s granddaughter.
David concluded the conversation and departed from Walford, eager to meet Joe and Holly; however, maintaining his anonymity might not be sustainable much longer.
Outside, where Freddie (Bobby Brazier) had positioned his bird microphone, there stood an impressive piece of equipment that could capture crisp and distinct sounds.
After Freddie hears the playback, he’s bound to experience a major surprise, keeping fans eagerly waiting to learn when the truth finally comes out.
