As a seasoned real estate enthusiast who has seen more than a few properties come and go, I must admit that Billy Joel’s Hamptons mansion caught my attention right off the bat. The property, named after the first note he learned on the piano, oozes charm and exclusivity with its 200 feet of private beach.

Reflecting on his humble roots from the blue-collar neighborhoods, Billy Joel is now trying to sell his luxurious $49.9 million estate situated on the Gold Coast of Long Island, New York – a dream home he once only imagined as a young boy.

75-year-old renowned musician and pianist gave an interview to The New York Times, featured in a piece published on Thursday, discussing his attempts to sell his vast estate, affectionately named ‘Middlesea.’ He has indeed listed this 26-acre property for sale at the price of $49.9 million.

Joel expressed his fondness for this place by saying, ‘This property is exceptional; I can’t imagine one more stunning. It reminds me of Gatsby’s estate from my childhood dreams, and giving up the keys will undoubtedly bring a sense of loss.’

According to the report, the property encompasses a grand total of 18 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. It boasts three swimming pools, a beach house, two guest houses, along with additional features like a bowling alley and a helipad.

In 2002, the five-time Grammy award recipient bought a manor that was situated on a 14-acre piece of land for $22.5 million. Over the years, he acquired several neighboring properties, eventually growing his estate to span over 26 acres.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: Reflecting on my roots, I find myself selling a mansion not far from my birthplace in The Bronx – Hicksville to be precise. Memories flood back as I recall my early days, laboring away at a minimum wage job, pulling oysters from the Long Island Sound. Looking at that very house then, it seemed like a distant dream, but here I am today, sharing its grandeur with others.

Joel expressed that during that moment, his thoughts were something like, “I’ll never reside in such an opulent dwelling as these wealthy individuals.” or “At that point, he found himself thinking, ‘Never in my own home will it resemble their extravagant properties.’

Joel, known for his working-class songs like Allentown and The Downeaster ‘Alexa’, found the idea that he would one day reside in the house he once envied, absurd.

Joel mentioned that he was raised in a home situated on a half-acre plot in a town called Hicksville. As a kid, he’d pedal his bike up to this place and go for a spin, passing by the homes of the wealthy residents, and sometimes expressing his disapproval verbally.

On Wednesday, the artist known as The Piano Man hosted an exclusive open house at his estate, which was accessible only by invitation. This gathering attracted Joel’s real estate agents and publicists, who made their way to the home via speedboat. The media reported that at this upscale event, background classical music played while liveried waiters offered shrimp and goat cheese hors d’oeuvres.

The paper states that at least one billionaire and a hedge fund based in Brussels were among those who inspected the property.

Distinguished individuals such as media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, well-known Fox News commentator Sean Hannity, and the heirs of Exxon Mobil have also lived in this region, according to Joel’s team as reported by the newspaper.

The musician who sings “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” referred to his property as ‘MiddleSea,’ hinting at its position right in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, symbolizing the central piano key, Middle C.

‘Without being able to learn piano, I likely wouldn’t have had the means to buy a property as expensive as this one,’ so he chose to name it after the initial note I learned on the piano, which was ‘C’.

Emmett Laffey, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, who’s collaborating with the singer on his real estate ventures, described the property as having an uncommon feature: a 200-foot stretch of beach.

The singer has a newly-renovated summer home in Sag Harbor that he will be keeping, and also owns a home in Manalapan, Florida.

Joel has two daughters, Della Rose (age 9) and Remy Anne (age 6), with his wife Alexis Roderick (42), whom he married in 2015; he is also the father of Alexa Ray Joel (38), from his previous marriage to Christie Brinkley (70).

Billy Joel, the artist behind “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” mentioned he’s putting up some of his properties for sale since he mainly resides in Florida, due to his younger kids attending school there. He explained this commitment as being ‘once they started going to school, you’re sort of tied down.’

Joel also cited the $567,686 annual taxes as motivation to place the estate on the market.

Joel put it this way: “It’s not inexpensive, to be frank, and given my level of success, I can tell you it’s quite a substantial amount.

Initially, the owner of My Life decided to sell their house in May 2023, but later withdrew it from sale in November the same year.

During a New Year’s Eve performance at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York (Long Island), the singer of “The Uptown Girl” hinted that he was planning to put his home up for sale. He mentioned that he was waiting for all renovations to be finished before he listed it again.

During the concert, Joel quipped humorously, “I’ll be staying a bit longer in Florida, just like some older gentlemen from Long Island.

Instead of leaving Long Island completely, the singer from Tell Her About It clarified that selling one house doesn’t equate to his departure: “I’m not leaving Long Island – I still own another house here.
