The Sisu movies are still very popular, proving that high box office numbers aren’t the only measure of a film’s lasting appeal. The newest installment, released in 2025, is now performing well on Netflix.
If you enjoyed John Wick, you’ll likely love Sisu: Road to Revenge, which is now available on Netflix after becoming popular on other platforms. It’s currently the sixth most-watched movie in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol.
The movie has been popular for nearly a week, climbing to the No. 3 spot on March 23rd. It’s remained in the charts even as other films have taken the lead, including a close competition between War Machine and Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, as well as a clever, self-aware reboot starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black.
Sisu Is the Rightful John Wick Replacement
Ever since 2014, many action movies have tried to copy the style of John Wick. The films combine a familiar action setup – a seemingly ordinary person who’s actually a highly skilled, secretive killer with a troubled history – and then send that character on a quest for revenge.
Even though the basic storyline of John Wick was fairly typical, the movie still revolutionized action cinema. It spawned three follow-up films, a TV show, and another movie based on the same universe, with even more projects planned.
This Finnish action series began in 2022 and is set during World War II. The first movie centers around Aatami Korpi, a famous former Finnish Army commando who’s now a gold prospector. He finds a large gold deposit and must fight for his life when a ruthless Waffen-SS officer and his unit try to steal it and kill him.
What Happens in Sisu: Road to Revenge?
Aatami, similar to the character John Wick, is incredibly skilled and seems almost unstoppable when facing those who have harmed him. The first movie was a surprising success, though it didn’t make a large profit. The 2022 film earned $11 million globally on a budget of €6 million (about $7.07 million). Critics loved it too, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating with a 94% approval score, and audiences agreed with an 88% rating.
The film spawned a sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, which came out in 2025. The story follows Aatami Korpi as he returns home to find his family murdered during the war. He decides to honor them by loading their house onto a truck and rebuilding it in a safe location. However, the man responsible for his family’s deaths reappears, intent on completing the gruesome task. This forces Aatami to embark on another violent quest for revenge.
Jorma Tommila returns as Aatami, and Richard Brake and Stephen Lang are new to the cast. Lang plays the Soviet officer responsible for the death of Korpi’s family.
Despite gaining popularity before its release, Sisu: Road to Revenge didn’t perform well in theaters. Though DVD and Blu-ray sales helped a little, the film, which cost $12.2 million to make, only earned $9.8 million worldwide.
The second film in the revenge thriller series was a hit with both critics and viewers. It earned a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the same score as the original – and was designated “Certified Fresh.” Audiences also loved it, giving it an 87% rating.
Despite not performing well in theaters, these films have found an audience on streaming services. Both Sisu and its follow-up have been popular so far, suggesting the series might gain a dedicated, cult following over time.
Sisu: Road to Revenge is streaming on Netflix.
