NASCAR: Full qualifying order revealed for Charlotte playoff race

As a dedicated NASCAR enthusiast with decades of racing passion under my belt, I can’t help but feel a thrill running down my spine as I gaze upon this impressive lineup for the Bank of America Roval 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. With two road course races in the playoffs for the first time ever, it’s an exhilarating time to be a fan!

For the first time ever in NASCAR Cup Series, two road course events are included in the playoffs. The second one is set to conclude the elimination round of 12 and decide which drivers will move forward to the semifinal stage of the four-round, 10-race playoff series.

After the playoff race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was changed from an oval to the “Roval” in 2017, this 17-turn, 2.28-mile (3.669-kilometer) road course in Concord, North Carolina has continued to be part of the postseason schedule. Each year, it serves as a cutoff race.

In 2020, the 109-lap Bank of America Roval 400 was shifted from the Round of 16 to the Round of 12 and it has stayed in that position since then. (Paraphrased)

At road courses, group qualifying isn’t just about individual cars. Instead, groups of cars are timed, and the quickest five from each group move on to a second-round showdown for the prime starting spot.

The groups eligible for competition were established using a four-factor equation, which was introduced by NASCAR in 2020. For more details about this criteria, you can find an explanation here.

Since the 12 potential champions haven’t been considered in the calculation yet, until all the other competitors have been assigned to their respective groups, there are six drivers from the Round of 12 in each group.
