Grotesquerie episodes 5 and 6 recap: A killer reveal fake out

As a fan who’s been hooked since the pilot episode, I can confidently say that Grotesquerie continues to deliver with its latest two episodes. The opening sequence of one continuous shot is nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing the grit and intensity that this series has become known for.

The bizarre spectacle known as “Grotesquerie” resurfaces this week, offering us two more episodes. Remarkably, the initial episode features nearly half its duration in a single, unbroken take – a truly remarkable cinematic achievement.

Following their encounter with Andrea on the road, Detective Lois and Sister Megan find themselves heading to a motel as directed by Andrea. Upon arrival, they quickly discover that the situation is far from peaceful. The woman behind the front desk bears visible bruises, hinting at the presence of a man named “Nick” who works there.

Lois and Megan attempt to locate Andrea, yet find a grisly scene with bloodsplatters and footprints leading out the door instead. Megan yearns for prayer and searching for Andrea, while Lois seeks some respite, until Nurse Redd phones, escalating her threats regarding Marshall. I’m unsure where this Nurse Redd plotline is headed; it appears to belong in a different series, but let’s move on.

At the motel, events spiral out of control: A car accident occurs in the parking lot followed by an attempt to drown the receptionist by Nick. When Lois and Megan return outside, another vehicle arrives and opens fire, abducting Andrea once more. Megan chases after her but gets wounded during the exchange. The pace is fast as each event unfolds rapidly. Remarkably, all these events are captured in a single take, showcasing the coordination required to manage numerous moving elements.

Megan’s injury lands her in the hospital. Father Charles comes to visit her, bringing her fresh flowers and reprimanding Lois for taking Megan out there in the first place, though she rightly points out that half the reason Megan is doing this is for his sensationalist church rag. Charles wants Lois to go out and find the killer since he’s stalking her and leave him to take care of Megan.

Just outside the hospital room, Lois encounters Detective Hanover. In an attempt to identify anyone with a grudge against her, she’s been reviewing her past arrests. A particular name catches her attention – that of a released murderer named Glorious who may bear ill will towards her.

The following day, another brutal crime wave unfolds. This ruthless perpetrator chose to strike when Lois was away from town, targeting a maternity ward in cold blood. He took the lives of multiple women undergoing C-sections, using their surgical tools as his weapons, and made off with the newborn babies. Given the heinous nature and escalating pattern of these killings, it seems the FBI is stepping in to take control, which could mean Lois might be removed from this case.

Lois emphasizes her determination not to retreat in the face of provocation from the killer who is targeting her personally. He has once more scrawled a chilling message, this time “allow the deceased to bury the deceased,” which she finds written on the wall. Shortly afterwards, she’s summoned to a neighboring house where it’s revealed that children are there alone. They mention that their mother, who was pregnant, had departed the previous night with an unfamiliar man.

Venturing ahead after a fresh clue, I stumble upon a wrecked vehicle swathed in bloodied rags and napkins. The path leads me to an orange grove where I discover a woman tenderly cradling a baby while tears stream down her face. She pleads for my aid as she whispers, “He intends to harm me.

Grotesquerie episode 6

In the next installment, we discover that the woman with the baby is named Maisie, but surprisingly, it isn’t her child. The blood wasn’t even hers. They take her to a hospital, and Lois attempts to persuade her to reveal the baby’s origin, but she remains tight-lipped. However, Maisie (and this comes as quite a shock from Kathryn Hunter!) does subtly hint at something by repeatedly using the word “glorious” in her conversations.

Lois reaches out to Hanover for the purpose of meeting Glorious, an ex-pimp and sex worker turned ministry service provider from her trailer home. After serving time in prison, Glorious worked as an informant which helped secure her early release and placement into witness protection. It appears that Glorious has information about the killer, referring to him as a “false prophet.” This is likely why she sent Maisie to Lois. It seems like the murderer might be leading some kind of religious or deceptive group.

That night, Lois receives a call, followed by a stranger taking her picture outside. Upon answering the door, Nurse Redd appears, bearing a bottle of vodka as a gesture of goodwill. It’s revealed that Redd has been obsessively interested in Marshall due to their past affair. Interestingly, Redd attended a terror management seminar taught by Marshall not once, but twice.

Initially, it appears as though Lois might be willing to forgive Redd; however, in an unexpected turn of events, she brandishes a gun, ordering Redd to leave her house permanently and stay away from her spouse.

At the hospital later on, Lois persistently questions Maisie for additional details. She proposes a possibility that this enigmatic figure could be some sort of being, perhaps even supernatural. He apparently unveiled a fire pit in the desert and allowed things to emerge from it. Eventually, Maisie discloses where the infants are located.

Lois and other officers arrive at an antiquated dairy processing plant, where they find a group of women forcibly suspended, reminiscent of livestock, to extract milk from them. These babies, being kept there, are then fed. The scene is extremely unsettling. Fortunately, both the women and the children appear to be alive.

In a hidden room, Lois stumbles upon a wall adorned with numerous pictures of herself – evidence of a secret admirer who has been trailing her for quite some time. Suddenly, someone creeps up from behind, threatening her with a knife at her neck. However, quick on her feet, Lois manages to disarm the attacker and shoot him before he can carry out his plan. She removes the mask, but the episode ends before revealing the assailant’s identity. I suspect it might be Father Chavez.

Towards the finale, some glimpses of the upcoming week’s events are hinted, suggesting that the culprit may have a partner-in-crime. Furthermore, the episode concludes with brief scenes such as Eddie and Merritt sharing a bed, and Megan stirring in the hospital.

Two fresh installments of the series “Grotesquerie” are broadcast each week, specifically on Wednesdays, over on FX. Additionally, you can catch up with these episodes on Hulu as well.
