Andrew Garfield forced to pick his favorite Spider-Man - and fans disagree with his choice

As I delve into this captivating tale of camaraderie among the Spider-Boys, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for their unique journey. Tom Holland, at just 28 years old, has not only ascended to superstardom as Spiderman, but also forged an extraordinary bond with his on-screen counterparts.

During a chat on Wednesday, three-time Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield faced a tough question: He had to pick his preferred choice among actors who portrayed Peter Parker.

It seems that the 41-year-old British man from LA found himself in a difficult decision, as he could only pick either seven-time Spider-Man actor Tom Holland or four-time Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire.

‘It’s a caveat answer, I’m afraid,’ Andrew told Vanity Fair after much thought.

As a young, aspiring actor in drama school, Tobey was my role model whom I admired and tried to emulate. However, I also hold Tom in high regard, and I find their respective careers incredibly impressive. In truth, I have an equal appreciation for both actors.

Although it was a significant period in my life, Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of Spider-Man feels personal. He’s the one I associate with the character, the one I looked up to and tried to emulate while growing up. However, I hold Tom Holland in high regard as well. I can’t choose between them, but yes, that’s my sentiment.

In the comments beneath Vanity Fair’s TikTok post featuring Andrew Garfield, numerous fans expressed their disappointment that he overlooked other performers who have portrayed or voiced Spider-Man, such as Jake Johnson from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Most of the fans strongly believed that the two-time Academy Award nominee was outstanding as Spider-Man, and they were unwilling to entertain any criticisms.

TikTok user @AJay commented: ‘Andrew Garfield [deserves a] trilogy.’

According to StevenGreen536 on TikTok, “Andrew is my favorite live-action [spiderman], Tobey’s is a timeless choice for a solid reason, and Tom is simply exceptional.

‘But I just love the attitude that Andrew brought to the role.’

TikTok user @DanPassant stated: “It was clear that Tobey was the choice, given his history of repeatedly watching those films to prepare for his acting part.

‘I feel like everyone’s answer is based on nostalgia TBH,’ TikTok user @Kat wrote.

My preferred Spiderman is Tom Holland because he was the one I initially encountered, yet I hold a special affection for Tobey and Andrew as well.

Let’s avoid making Andrew Garfield select his favorites (though we already did), regarding Florence Pugh, Little Women, Dune, Dune Part Two, We Live in Time, Midsommar, The Amazing Spiderman, Tick Tick Boom, Spiderman, Thunderbolts, Tom Holland, and Tobey Maguire.

TikTok user @Gray commented: ‘Okay, but Yuri Lowenthal is the only truly correct answer.’

‘”Isn’t there only 3?!”‘ TikTok user @Lbby2722 blasted.

‘Nicholas Hammond, Shinji Todo, and all the dozens of VAs!’

User @SomeCanadianGuy stated: “In my opinion, Tom is the top pick for Peter Parker, while Garfield excels as Spider-Man (with his witty remarks and constant chatter). Tobey Maguire set a strong foundation and was skillful in both roles, but neither of them surpass the others when compared directly.

A year ago, it was disclosed that Holland has been part of a unique group chat with Andrew and Toby, following their joint portrayal of Peter Parker in the 2021 movie Spider-Man: No Way Home from the multiverse.

In a heartfelt statement, the 28-year-old British native shared with THR Magazine, “We share an extraordinary connection, being three individuals who’ve experienced something so distinct that we feel more like brothers.

‘We have a great group chat and we catch up every now and then. It’s called the Spider-Boys.’

Tom mentioned that it was a delight to shoot the clandestine sequences for Jon Watt’s highly praised superhero trilogy sequel, which grossed a staggering $1.922 billion worldwide on a production budget of just $200 million.

Holland felt particularly gratified to eventually engage in a thorough conversation with Garfield, someone he regrets not reaching out to after winning the role against 7,500 contenders at age 19 in 2015. His words were, “That’s due to my youthful innocence…I just wish I had contacted him back then.

In simpler terms, the person responsible for producing and starring in The Crowded Room has expressed some nervousness during discussions about the next Spider-Man movie with producers and Marvel executives.

In the initial gatherings, there seemed to be a question of repeating the process. However, I believe we’ve discovered the rationale behind it. Frankly, I’m extremely pleased with the direction our creativity has taken.

While I’m excited, there’s a small concern too. The fourth installment often faces negative perceptions across franchises. It feels like we knocked it out of the park with our first franchise, and part of me wishes to hand off the responsibility gracefully to the next talented individual who will breathe life into this character.

The actor from George Orwell’s 1984 will soon appear as Tobias Durand, a representative for Weetabix, alongside Florence Pugh’s character Almut Brühl who is a chef, in John Crowley’s popular romantic drama “We Live in Time.” This film is set to premiere in US theaters on October 18, 2024, and UK theaters on January 1, 2025.
