Hugh Bonneville addresses Paddington 3’s Mrs Brown recasting

As a dedicated fan of the magical world of Paddington Bear, I must say that the news about the recasting of Mrs Brown in Paddington 3 has left me slightly bewildered but also intrigued. Having grown accustomed to Sally Hawkins’ enchanting portrayal of this beloved character, it was a bit jarring at first to hear that Emily Mortimer would be stepping into her paw prints.

Hugh Bonneville has addressed Paddington 3‘s recasting of Mrs Brown.

In the third movie, named “Paddington in Peru,” there’s a change in the director from Paul King to Dougal Wilson, and the character of Mrs. Brown is played by Emily Mortimer rather than Sally Hawkins.

In conversation with Empire, Bonneville stated about the matter: “We aren’t trying to hide the truth; it’s simply an exchange without any complications.

“There has not been a hideous divorce or anything. Emily just seemed like a perfect fit.”

Wilson commented that: “We were fortunate to have Emily join us. She’s luminous, friendly, and incredibly intelligent; being a writer herself, she’s exceptional at improvising lines. It’s a challenging part: She serves as the emotional heart of the Browns and shares an emotional bond with Paddington.

Upon the announcement of the change, Hawkins herself expressed that there wasn’t any dramatic context behind the decision; instead, she felt a desire to shift her focus towards something new.

Hawkins stated, “It seems appropriate for me to pass on leadership now, and I couldn’t think of anyone more fitting than the exceptional Emily Mortimer. She is truly unique.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but confess my undying affection for the captivating realm of Paddington. Even as I navigate through other virtual worlds, the memories of my on-screen and off-screen family linger, leaving me with a deep sense of longing.

Making the initial two movies was undeniably among the most inspiring and creatively fulfilling periods in my cinematic journey. Each one brought me immense happiness, and I carry a deep affection for them in my heart that will never fade away.

After the recent shift, Rachel Zegler had to withdraw from the movie following her casting, as a result of the Hollywood strikes that occurred last year. Subsequently, Carla Tous took over the role previously assigned to Zegler as Gina Cabot.

This month, catch the return of both Paddington and its sequel to the big screen (showtimes may differ). The next Paddington adventure in Peru is slated for release in UK cinemas on November 8, 2024, and in US cinemas on January 17, 2025.
