Max finally canceled one of the most unpopular shows, and we're so relieved

As a long-time Scooby-Doo enthusiast and Velma devotee, I have to say that Max finally cancelling Mindy Kaling’s Velma is a breath of fresh air, even if it comes with a tinge of nostalgia. While Velma was my favorite character from the original series, this reimagining just didn’t live up to the hype for me – or for many others, judging by the lackluster reception it received.

It’s always disheartening when one of our beloved shows gets canceled, and it’s equally dissatisfying when a streaming service or platform continues airing a show that isn’t well-received or faces a lot of criticism. In the case of Mindy Kaling’s Velma, this situation applies doubly so.

At last, Max has formally scrapped Mindy Kaling’s “Velma” project, and frankly, I’m glad that’s over. No regrets, but it’s high time for shows that truly resonate with audiences to take center stage. The fall season isn’t a moment for playful experimentation; it’s when we demand the best from television, particularly streaming platforms.

To clarify, let me say this upfront: Despite popular opinion favoring Daphne, my favorite character from the Scooby-Doo animated series has always been Velma. In fact, “jinkies!” became one of my signature phrases, though it didn’t exactly boost my cool factor at school. But who cares! The news that a new Velma series was in development, especially with Mindy Kaling at the helm, had me pretty thrilled!

As additional information emerged, such as it being a risqué prequel, I started to harbor some reservations. Nevertheless, I chose to watch and, to put it mildly, it wasn’t my top pick. It turned out that I wasn’t the only one who felt that way, as the animated series didn’t garner positive feedback or reviews from critics and viewers alike. I was convinced that Max would cancel Velma after the first season, so you can imagine my shock when a second season of Velma was announced instead.

Velma season 2 premiered earlier this year on April 25, 2024, releasing all 10 episodes on the same day. After the full season drop, it was crickets. We’re not sure what took Max so long to officially cancel the animated series, but it’s about time. How do you feel about this move? And why do you think it took Max so long to pull the plug?

As a gaming enthusiast here, I’m super excited to share that I can still catch both seasons of “Velma” on Max! This series features some amazing talent like Mindy Kaling, Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, and the fantastic Constance Wu lending their voices. So, grab your streaming devices, my fellow gamers, let’s dive into this mystery together!
