The Irrational season 2 premiere recap and review: Who took Rose?

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the virtual landscapes of various games, I can tell you that The Irrational’s latest season opener was nothing short of thrilling. It had all the elements of a gripping mystery: a missing character, a close-knit team, and a ticking clock.

In the opening episode of the second season of “The Irrational,” it was Alec who took immediate action when he discovered that Rose was absent. Quite an exciting start to the season, wouldn’t you agree?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Irrational season 2, episode 1

The first episode needed to follow directly from the end of season 1. This was undeniable. But instead of starting right away with where Rose was, we began by showing Alec discovering that Rose had vanished.

She failed to show up for their date, and it seemed like her messages weren’t getting through. Could she be at her place? It didn’t take Alec much time to figure out that someone had been stalking her apartment and that she might have been abducted. He urgently needed Marissa and the FBI to help find her.

Marissa stepped in to find Rose in The Irrational season 2 premiere

Initially, Marissa doubted if Rose was truly absent. Given Rose’s line of work, Marissa’s skepticism made sense. Amazingly, Alec didn’t mind Marissa questioning this. Instead, he explained his reasons for believing something was amiss, and instantly, Marissa trusted them. I’m looking forward to learning more about their past and how they remain close friends despite being former partners during this season.

Marissa promptly began searching for Rose, and soon enough, she managed to unravel everything. Naturally, her MI6 background played a significant role in this mystery. A newly released book had hinted at some events, even if names were altered, those involved would recognize the underlying truth. This discovery eventually led a man to understand that Rose and an author named Harry, who wrote the book, were the agents implicated in his wife’s demise.

He sought vengeance, and this implied that Rose had to devise a method to thwart him. However, things seemed unlikely when he murdered Harry. Even Alec attempted an experiment to determine if someone could be persuaded against seeking revenge. Unfortunately, the results were not favorable. It appears that people are indeed unable to be dissuaded from retribution.

Later in the episode, Alec mentions a method that’s been shown to prevent retaliation, but it requires several days. Unfortunately, they didn’t have that luxury of time. It’s interesting though, that he suggested such an alternative if they had more time available.

Alec finds a way to get himself taken

It’s no wonder that the kidnapper of Rose has targeted individuals close to her. Given that revenge often involves hurting someone through those they care about, it seems logical that this is the case with Rose. Among these people is Alec, who puts himself in danger to find and rescue Rose.

It’s all right. Since Kylie is now collaborating with the FBI, she can locate where he is. In the meantime, Alec aims to stall him and Rose, which he manages partially. As Rose assumes responsibility for the wife’s demise, Alec challenges her honesty. Eventually, the truth surfaces. It turns out that the wife was secretly working with MI6 to betray her cousins, but the operation ended in a minor setback resulting in her death. This unfortunate event has always weighed heavily on Rose, revealing another facet of her character. Given her profession, it’s only natural for her to care deeply about field operatives.

Ultimately, Marissa and the FBI manage to reach the specified location, but they arrive too late. Tragically, Alec and Rose were forced on a suicide mission by the perpetrator, who intended to detonate an MI6 building. This catastrophic act would result in the simultaneous loss of life for himself, Rose, and Alec. Despite Alec’s desperate attempts to dissuade him from this revenge plot, his efforts only delayed the inevitable, allowing the FBI to track them down and fatally engage the abductor.

Is there hope for Rose and Alec after this in The Irrational season 2?

Instead of leaving the hospital without informing Alec, Rose chose to absent herself, leading him to visit her apartment to check on her well-being. It’s evident that she harbors guilt for dragging Alec into her past affairs. I appreciate the writers’ decision to avoid the cliché of Rose mysteriously vanishing and leaving things unsaid with Alec. Despite initial appearances suggesting a potential breakup, they engaged in a discussion, albeit one that initially seemed like it might signal the end of their relationship.

Alec refuses to allow this to end, though. So Rose comes with a past. Everyone has baggage, and some of it is going to be scarier than other baggage. That doesn’t mean their relationship can’t continue. They don’t get to repeat their date because Rose has to leave for work, but there is some hope that the two will be able to pick things back up when she returns.

What’s going on with Phoebe?

At the beginning of the episode, I found myself in the same auditorium as Alec, with Phoebe seated there too, looking less than thrilled about her latest professional venture. It seems she’s yearning for more, and I have a hunch that this new role might not be providing the excitement or fulfillment she craves. There’s an air of discontent around her, hinting that we may uncover issues with the work itself or perhaps the teaching approach it employs.

The grass isn’t greener on the other side.

The Irrational season 2 airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
