Veteran Marvel star may not be retiring role after all; return "TBD"

As a longtime Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of these iconic characters on both the big and small screens, I am thrilled by the latest rumors surrounding Tom Hardy’s potential return as Venom in the MCU. The symbiotic anti-hero has become one of my favorites over the years, and seeing his story continue beyond the Sony trilogy would be a delight.

Over the last ten years, numerous actors have brought Marvel Comics characters to life on the silver screen, taking leading roles in blockbuster films within a series, reprising their performances for multiple sequels (and occasionally, crossovers), and ultimately concluding their portrayal of the character permanently. This phenomenon has been prevalent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans wrapping up their turns as Iron Man and Captain America respectively. Similarly, this has occurred in the Fox Marvel movies with the actors playing X-Men characters.

Occasionally, actors take up their roles once more, such as Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Deadpool and Wolverine,” or the dual appearances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.

One notable actor has significantly reshaped a significant Marvel character beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but rumors hinted at his departure from the role. However, a recent report seems to contradict those speculations.

Tom Hardy rumored to return as Venom, likely in the MCU

Tom Hardy’s run as the lead in the Venom series for Sony Pictures might be drawing to a close, but it seems his character Eddie Brock still has some unfinished business. As per Marvel insider Alex Perez in a social media post, there’s more story left for Hardy’s Venom. Additionally, during a fan Q&A hosted by The Cosmic Circus, the insider hinted at Tom Hardy’s Venom potentially having a significant role in Spider-Man 4, responding “To Be Determined”.

In the Sony Venom trilogy, Tom Hardy first played the character in 2018’s Venom, and then again in 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage. He will reprise his role once more in the upcoming sequel, Venom: The Last Dance, which is due for release this month and is anticipated to conclude the trilogy.

It appears that Hardy has hinted at this film being his farewell as the symbiotic Marvel character Venom, saying to fans “That concludes our time – from me and the big guy – we enjoyed every moment.” However, Perez suggests on Twitter that this may not be the end of Venom’s story. This speculation has sparked fan discussions about a potential future appearance by Venom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

In case it comes to pass, it wouldn’t be a novelty for me to show up in this franchise, as I made a fleeting appearance in the epilogue of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. During that movie, Eddie Brock and Venom were unexpectedly whisked into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, only to be returned to their own realm shortly after settling at a bar. Yet, if given the chance, I’d be thrilled to rejoin the action!

The preview for “Venom: The Last Dance” appears to resemble a familiar scene, but this time in Venom’s realm, causing some fans to wonder if it might pave the way for a larger collaboration between these two series. Given that Marvel Studios are presently narrating the Multiverse Story, such an event seems plausible.

It’s been speculated that the upcoming Spider-Man trilogy featuring Tom Holland as Peter Parker might delve into the symbiote storyline. Could Venom, played by Tom Hardy, or even the remnant of the symbiote from the post-credits scene be involved in some way?

If Venom doesn’t appear in the Spider-Man movie franchise, it’s possible that he might appear instead in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. These films are anticipated to include characters from the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and given his immense global popularity, it would be fitting to include him.
