I was so heartbroken when I heard Charlie Daniels passed away in 2020 at 83. I figured that meant I’d never get to experience his incredible energy live again. But it turns out, I might be wrong! They’re finding a way to bring his music back to the stage, and I can’t quite believe it.
I’m so excited to hear that as part of the big 250th birthday celebration for the US, they’re going to have a hologram of the legendary Charlie Daniels perform at Fort Campbell in Kentucky! It’s going to be an awesome show with Aaron Tippin, Eric Lee Beddingfield, and the amazing 101st Airborne Division Band too. What a cool way to honor his memory!
It’s hard to know what Tippin and Beddingfield think about being overshadowed by a hologram, but they’ll probably say they’re honored to perform for the troops. Still, having a hologram as the main act is a pretty unusual concept.
Charlies Daniels’ hologram to perform on July 4
You know, it’s wild to think about how Prince felt about technology. He absolutely hated it, even called it ‘demonic’! He believed if he was supposed to be performing, he’d still be here, and that everything happens for a reason. It’s a pretty powerful thought, especially as a musician – like, should we really be relying on these digital things to keep the music going?
Creating a hologram of a deceased artist could open the door for others to profit from their fame. However, that doesn’t seem to be the intention with Charlie Daniels.
Charlie Daniels Jr. is assisting with the production of the show, which will be the first time a hologram of his father is used. It seems fitting to debut this technology before an audience who appreciated the elder Daniels, lending authenticity to the use of his image. Whether the show will be profitable remains uncertain.
Though best known as a country music icon and a member of the Grand Ole Opry (since 2007), Daniels enjoyed a remarkably varied career. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and also collaborated with major artists like Bob Dylan – playing bass on three of his albums – and Leonard Cohen, contributing to their songwriting.
Charlie Daniels is most famous for his 1979 song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which features incredible fiddle playing. Many artists across various musical styles have performed their own versions of the song.
