Naked and Afraid star Alexa Towersey reveals she was haunted by evil spirits for decades

In a recent statement, “Naked and Afraid” cast member Alexa Towersey revealed that she has experienced persistent hauntings by malevolent entities who trailed her from her native New Zealand to her current home in Australia.

For a period of 21 days, the 44-year-old endured survival in the dense Colombian wilderness, devoid of sustenance, shelter, or clothing, as featured on the popular Discovery Channel series.

Despite being a bold fitness trainer, renowned for her courage, she remains petrified by the potential resurfacing of a ghost that has long pursued and tormented her for many years.

According to her, he attempted to choke her while she was asleep in Auckland, and later, during their time living together in Sydney’s eastern region, he physically assaulted her once more.

Towersey, who works with artists like Delta Goodrem, Guy Sebastian, and Jessica Gomes, has become so cautious that she avoids watching horror films due to a dread that another supernatural entity might seize hold of her again.

‘I won’t even watch a supernatural scary movie,’ she said.

As a lifestyle expert, I have unique sensitivities that set me apart. While it may seem harmless to many, engaging in something as seemingly benign as watching a horror movie might unwittingly send signals inviting unwanted interactions for someone like me.

The experiences of Alexa involving the unexplained are chronicled in a recently published book titled “Australian Ghost Stories,” written by renowned journalist and successful true crime writer, James Phelps.

As a teenager living with her family in an antique home situated along the eastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island, specifically in Gisborne, the woman who was once an ironwoman started experiencing unusual, supernatural occurrences for the first time.

In my fervent admiration for Alexa, I can’t help but be deeply moved by the stories of her past struggles. You see, she’d shared that her childhood was tainted by her father’s alcoholism and her mother’s manic depression. One harrowing moment from those tumultuous times was when she unexpectedly walked in on her mother during a heart-wrenching suicide attempt. It takes immense courage to share such personal experiences, and Alexa’s resilience continues to inspire me.

From her teenage years through her late twenties, the inspirational speaker and mental health activist faced a personal struggle with alcohol addiction.

When Alexa turned fifteen, on a typical school day, she found herself standing in her kitchen at home, and she distinctly heard a sound similar to a door being opened and shut.

It appeared as if the sound originated from the upper floor, yet what disturbed Alexa the most was the fact that no one else was meant to be there.

Then she heard heavy footsteps, as if someone was coming downstairs.

At that point, Alexa informed the book’s writer that things became quite chaotic. Suddenly, I was able to detect not just footsteps but also voices as well.

As your trusted lifestyle guide, I found myself at the foot of the staircase, where faint voices echoed and doors seemed to dance open and shut like a well-choreographed ballet.

The schoolgirl was so freaked out she called her parents and said, ‘Somebody has to come home right now because I’m not going back inside that house’.

‘I was absolutely terrified,’ she told Phelps.

Upon their arrival home, I discovered nothing out of the ordinary, yet the incidents of that day would forever linger in my mind like an unshakeable specter, shaping the course of my life.

Over the next couple of weeks, Alexa had even more weird encounters. She once woke to howling and banging on the wall.

Alexa started pondering if she was perhaps mistaken. After all, her parents didn’t buy into her initial tale.

She admitted that her fear had become overwhelming, to the extent that she felt compelled to inform them that it was necessary for us to relocate, as she was extremely anxious.

The family swiftly relocated to a different neighborhood within Gisborne, yet Alexa continued to sense an ominous presence lurking around her.

Shortly after settling into their new place, Alexa found herself seated on the couch with a growing sense that trouble was imminent.

Just then, a huge flock of birds appeared out of nowhere and smashed straight into a window.

‘One after another, bang, bang, bang, they just hammered into the house,’ she told Phelps.

On this occasion, they spotted traces of blood and feathers that suggested some incident had taken place, yet they remained certain it was a part of the normal, natural course of events.

At seventeen, Alexa departed from her hometown to study at a university in Auckland. However, she admitted that she found it challenging to discern the distinction between reality and the supernatural by this point.

The student quickly discovered that the apartment he rented, located above a café, seemed ominous and full of negative energy.

‘There was an evil energy in the place,’ Alexa said.

‘This experience was on another level compared to what I had previously encountered.’

One night Alexa woke in terror, feeling she was being strangled by some unseen force.

‘Something was on top of me, and it had its hands around my throat,’ she said.

Each night, I lay in my bed, gripped by terror, struggling to breathe, my heart pleading to a higher power for the constricting force on my throat to relent.

On a particular morning, following the arrival of a new housemate, she announced to her roommates that her bed seemed to have levitated off the ground.

Indeed, I stepped inside and found the bed floating aloft, I shared with you all. Then, I disclosed that I sensed a presence slip into bed next to me on each of the past four evenings.

The roommates, who had all observed unusual occurrences, reached out to a nearby church the following day. Upon arrival, five members of the congregation appeared, bringing Bibles, crystals, and candles with them.

The novice exorcists offered prayers and incantations as they circled the apartment, subsequently engaged in a conversation amongst themselves.

One of the attendees at the church expressed their belief that the apartment was occupied by a ghostly old man, whose wife had passed away in her sleep. They suggested this apparition was manifesting itself by sharing the bed with the latest female occupant.

Following additional singing, Alexa began experiencing a severe abdominal discomfort. Two congregation members mimicked the action of fishing, and as if by magic, two unseen entities emerged.

‘They explained that spirits often attached themselves to people and followed them,’ Alexa said.

They thought it was possible that the initial supernatural entity I encountered was from the old house in Gisborne, and I’ve been harboring it with me continuously since then.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “It’s plausible that the other spirit could originate from any location, yet considering the circumstances, it seems highly probable that its presence has roots in this very home.

The last instance when Alexa sensed any malevolent spirit in the apartment had passed, however, one of her scariest ghostly encounters was still forthcoming.

Approximately eight years ago, Alexa, who was 36 at the time, resided in Sydney alongside a Miss Universe contestant. One evening, they both noticed peculiar sounds.

They rose from their resting place and noticed something unusual – it seemed less like a person and more like a shadowy figure – standing in the corridor beyond.

The following evening, both Alexa and her roommate observed the same peculiar figure in the exact spot simultaneously. Yet, it seemed there were further occurrences ahead.

Alexa mentioned that the portrait hanging in our bathroom appeared as if it were weeping, yet it wasn’t damp.

This time Alexa called an ‘energy healer’ she knew and he asked her to send him video footage of each room in the flat, as well as photographs of herself.

When the healer examined the photographs, he informed Alexa that there appeared to be an issue on the left side of her face.

She explained, “A chill ran down my back since I’ve been experiencing headaches and facial numbness or nerve pain on the same side.

While pondering over the healer’s words, Alexa was jolted by a sound emanating from her bedroom.

‘This picture had come crashing down just after he told me about the presence,’ she said.

The visitor, who aided in guiding spirits towards their next realm within the apartment, informed Alexa that these entities became connected with her due to her being ‘energy-permeable’ or ‘energy-vulnerable’.

Ever since that occasion, Alexa has kept her distance from anything that might be associated with ‘unfavorable or disruptive forces’ to steer clear of any more paranormal experiences.

The number of things I’ve gone through is simply overwhelming,” Alexa explained. “I plan not to get involved in such circumstances in the future.

On Sunday evening in Australia, the episode featuring Alexa aired from the show Naked and Afraid. Fifteen years prior, she decided to stop consuming alcohol extensively following her father’s passing due to alcoholism.

She lost lost 13kg during her stay in the Amazon and emerged from the jungle a better person.

One reason I enjoy tackling such huge obstacles is because I want to test myself, to discover what my limitations are,” Alexa explained.

I’ve consistently believed myself to be strong, competent, and self-reliant. Today, I demonstrated yet again that I embody those very qualities – quite remarkably satisfying, if I may say so myself.
