The story begins with local authorities puzzled by a crossword found on a deceased person’s body, struggling to make progress in their investigation. In desperation, they approach Cora Felton, a newcomer to Bakerbury who is well-known for her abilities as a puzzle solver (nicknamed the Puzzle Lady). They hope that she can assist DCI Hooper and the Bakerbury police force in solving their first ever murder case.

However, the unconventional character named Cora may not be as she presents herself… As she delves deeper into a puzzling murder mystery that leaves the townspeople mystified, she manages to amass both friends and foes alike.
