NASCAR: One driver has already advanced, despite not winning

As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with decades of races under my belt, I must say that William Byron’s performance this season has been nothing short of impressive. The runner-up finish at Kansas Speedway and the third place at Talladega Superspeedway may not have been wins, but they certainly feel as good as one for Byron and Hendrick Motorsports.

In the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs’ round of 12, runner-up finishes at Kansas Speedway and third place at Talladega Superspeedway have proven to be equivalent victories for William Byron from Hendrick Motorsports, demonstrating his strong performance and potential for success.

This year, Byron has secured his spot in the final eight for the second year in a row. He’s in such a position that he can’t be knocked out of the top eight in the playoff standings during the race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on Sunday afternoon, regardless of the mathematical calculations.

This year, the driver operating the No. 24 Chevrolet, who hasn’t tasted victory since April, is gunning for his second straight berth in the Championship 4 following his impressive run last season that included a personal best of six wins.

William Byron locks up first round of 8 spot

Byron currently sits at the top with 3,122 points, boasting a 74-point lead over Joey Logano, who’s in ninth position. The crucial difference, determining Byron’s advancement into the semifinal round, is his distance from the driver in eighth place.

In simple terms, Byron currently leads his teammate Chase Elliott by a margin of 61 points in the eighth position. This implies that if a competitor outside the top eight manages to win the upcoming Bank of America Roval 400 on Sunday afternoon, the difference between the winner and the cut line would be 61 points, not 74 points for Byron.

Even with a lead of 61 points, Byron’s position is secure because:

Neither the Kansas nor Talladega race winners have secured a place in the quarterfinals, since neither of them qualified for the playoffs. Ross Chastain from Trackhouse Racing Team emerged victorious in Kansas, while Ricky Stenhouse Jr., racing for JTG Daugherty Racing, won at Talladega.

Byron is set to advance to the Elimination Round with 23 playoff points, which places him fourth amongst all drivers. However, there are still opportunities for him to increase this tally, as another 7 playoff points are available at Charlotte before the Elimination Round concludes.

In the NASCAR standings, Kyle Larson from Hendrick Motorsports, currently in third place and boasting a comfortable 52-point advantage over the elimination zone, holds the most playoff points at 47. Close behind is Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing, occupying the second spot and 57 points clear of the cut line, with 32 playoff points under his belt. Tyler Reddick from 23XI Racing, precariously placed in seventh and only 14 points above the elimination line, has managed to accumulate 28 playoff points so far.
