Formula 1: Two teams have open seats, and there could be a third

As a seasoned gamer who’s been following Formula 1 since the days of Senna and Prost, I can’t help but feel like I’m watching a game of musical chairs unfold at Red Bull Racing. The recent confirmation of Liam Lawson as Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement for the rest of the 2024 season is intriguing, given that there are only six races left in the calendar year. It seems Sergio Perez might be the next to feel the heat, with rumors swirling about his underperformance and contract clauses not being met.

Just got word that I’m stepping into Daniel Ricciardo’s shoes at Red Bull Racing for the rest of the 2024 F1 season, right after the Singapore GP. Can’t wait to hit the track!

As a gamer, I’ve found myself in a tight spot with only six races left on this 24-race marathon. Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have been growing increasingly frustrated with my performance, as they seem to believe I’ve been underperforming consistently. Rumor has it that they’ve wanted me off the team since the Spanish Grand Prix a few months back.

It’s being suggested that Sergio Perez might not continue with Red Bull next season due to his prolonged underperformance. His results have fallen short of the expectations set by his contract, while Max Verstappen has consistently excelled compared to him.

Despite denying retirement speculations ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix in late October, there remains a possibility that Red Bull may decide to part ways with Perez swiftly, similar to their handling of Ricciardo’s departure.

What Red Bull want from Lawson

Reflecting on a recent chat, Horner hinted at Lawson joining our Red Bull family isn’t merely for RaceBred (RB) but for the entire team. This suggests that our lineup might see changes next season too, although it’s worth noting Perez is tied to us till 2026 as per his contract.

As a gamer, if I’m Lawson aiming for that promotion in 2025, the next six races are make-or-break moments. To impress Horner and Marko, I need to show a consistent good pace, whether it means battling against Yuki Tsunoda or outperforming him. Ideally, I’d even like to beat Perez from time to time to really catch their attention.

It’s important to note that as of now, RB and Sauber are yet to fill their vacant seats for the 2025 racing season. While Lawson has been officially assigned by the team for the rest of the 2024 season, they have not confirmed his position for the following year. This ambiguity could potentially suggest that Perez’s seat with Red Bull might still be up for grabs, despite him being contractually bound.

If Perez doesn’t significantly improve his performance, Red Bull is highly likely to surrender second place in the constructor championship to Ferrari in 2025, the concluding year of the current rule set. Given they’ve claimed the title for the past two years, their goal would be to regain it next year, and a driver pairing of Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson in the RB21 might offer their best chance at achieving that feat.
