The Penguin episode 3 review, “Bliss”: Vic’s backstory revealed

As a fan who has been captivated by the gritty and gripping world of Gotham for years, I must say that “The Penguin” episode 3, “Bliss,” is shaping up to be a masterclass in storytelling. The way the narrative weaves together the lives of various characters, each with their own unique struggles and motivations, is nothing short of remarkable.

In episode 3 of “The Penguin“, titled “Bliss”, Oz strategically maneuvers to seize the Falcone empire, playing a prolonged game. Concurrently, he imparts valuable wisdom to Vic in an effort to cultivate him into a formidable mobster.

In this installment of “The Penguin”, Sofia and Oz join forces for the first time. Each possesses unique abilities and ties, making it apparent that they’re mutually dependent. However, the question remains – how long will their collaboration last, and at what point might one betray the other?

In addition, we delve deeper into Vic’s character, uncovering his past experiences. The episode commences by transporting us back to the conclusion of The Batman, where the Riddler inundated the city sector where Vic resided. This segment showcases Vic’s life with his parents and the deep affection he held for them. The scene where all sound fades as Vic desperately calls out for his mother, only to witness the apartment building being swept away by the water and taking his parents’ lives, is incredibly moving. All that Vic can do is observe the destruction unfold from the rooftop of another building.

The Penguin episode 3 review, “Bliss“: Vic knows there’s no way out

We encounter characters from Vic’s past, such as his love interest, Graciela. They manage to stay away from the chaos unfolding, yet they haven’t appeared together on the show. This situation illustrates how differently people cope with traumatic experiences. While Vic chooses to stick with his old gang post-event, Graciela decides it’s time for a fresh start. She encourages Vic to leave Gotham, but he feels bound due to his past experiences. With Oz around, is escape even an option for him? This could serve as an interesting demonstration of how people handle adversity in different ways.

Simultaneously, I believe Vic is savoring the current chapter of his life. While Oz is showing him the ropes of becoming a mobster, he’s also imparting valuable life lessons. Oz displays patience with Vic’s stutter, emphasizing the importance of taking up space. With his family absent, it’s understandable that Vic has gravitated towards Oz. He yearns for a sense of belonging, and he feels he’s found it.

Despite having severe PTSD, Vic might find himself in a precarious situation. As he circulates the latest drug, Bliss, within the club, a melody or flash of light stirs an old memory. Overwhelmed by thoughts of explosions and flooding, Vic collapses in the club. Oz may not witness this incident directly, but word might reach him. It seems inevitable that this issue will resurface in the future, potentially putting Vic’s life at risk and causing complications for Oz.

Sofia feels the threat from Johnny Vitti

Sofia is gradually positioning herself to seize control of the Falcone crime family, but not all members are comfortable with this plan. Johnny Vitti, in particular, strongly advocates for Luca to assume leadership and is ready to employ any means necessary to make it happen. This includes intimidating Sofia.

Oz possesses a cunning strategy. He manages to involve Luca’s wife in a scheme intended to silence Vitti through blackmail. In response, Vitti tries to undermine Oz by revealing that the Falcone family has never fully trusted him and hold him in low regard. They maintain Oz more for amusement rather than genuine respect. This can be rephrased as:

To expand their supply chain, Sofia and Oz plan a discussion with the Triad crime syndicate. Given her quick-wittedness and persuasive abilities, Sofia finds herself in a position where she must utilize her skills. Despite her unpredictable nature, she excels at thinking on her feet and manipulating others to do her bidding. It’s about demonstrating her indispensability rather than her reliance on others. In the meeting with the Triad leader, Sofia asserts that Bliss is the key to controlling the streets, and if they refuse to partner with her, she will find another distributor. Ultimately, the Triad concedes.

As we delve deeper into Sofia’s character, it’s becoming evident that she has leveraged her personal struggles to draw the Triad into her affairs. Furthermore, it was discovered that Oz was the one who divulged information about her mental health issues to Carmine, resulting in her incarceration at Arkham. Contrary to popular belief, Sofia is not the Hangman, but Oz’s words have caused many to view her in this light.

In spite of everything, they both seem to depend on each other. There comes a point where it seems Oz isn’t merely trying to seize control of the family; instead, it appears he yearns for Sofia to stand beside him as a gesture of remorse for his past actions. Simultaneously, he has personal ambitions and aspirations that could necessitate Sofia’s absence from the picture.

Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell are interacting wonderfully, creating a unique dynamic that leaves me rooting for both of them.

Vic has the opportunity to get out of dodge

Following the incident that triggered a flashback, Vic makes his way towards the club’s restroom, where Oz locates him. In a vulnerable moment, Vic shares his feelings of unease about being part of this lifestyle. At first, Oz reacts with anger and pain, even threatening to harm Vic, but ultimately decides to spare him. With no other means of transportation, Vic takes Oz’s car and rushes to the bus station, where he sadly watches Graciela board a bus and depart.

Deep within Vic lies a struggle: he acknowledges the necessity of departure, yet finds resistance towards leaving his current existence. This narrative echoes a tale of a wandering boy yearning for a sense of belonging, and its authenticity is captivating. Despite my wish for him to board that bus and flee this life, it seemed evident that the allure of Oz’s offerings was too compelling.

It’s not unexpected that he would rejoin the team and select Oz, even though it seems he’s uncertain. His timing couldn’t be more opportune. The Maronis are on the verge of executing Oz and Sofia, but just as Vic collides with a Maroni henchman and a car, creating enough chaos for Oz to escape. In the heat of the moment, Oz demonstrates his survival skills by fleeing, abandoning Sofia in the process. Trust between them? Not so much anymore!

The Penguin airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
