Dead Marvel favorite will reportedly return in Spider-Man 4

As a die-hard fan of the Spider-Man universe who has grown up with the web-slinger across various cinematic adaptations, hearing about the rumored return of Emma Stone as Spider-Gwen in the upcoming Spider-Man 4 and Avengers: Secret Wars is nothing short of exhilarating!

Despite rumors about Spider-Man 4 circulating for quite some time, it wasn’t until recently that its development was officially confirmed. This confirmation came when it was revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, would be taking charge of the film. He steps in for Jon Watts, who directed the first three Spider-Man movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it seems that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are ready to start a new chapter in the series.

There’s been plenty of chatter about the upcoming movie, where Tom Holland and Zendaya reprise their roles as Peter Parker and MJ Watson respectively. It’s rumored that this film could be another installment in the multiverse, following in the footsteps of its predecessor Spider-Man: No Way Home, which significantly impacted the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Storyline (and brought back Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield). If true, expect cameos, reappearances, and even some sort of resurrections in this film.

That’s what this newest rumor suggests might happen in the upcoming film.

Emma Stone rumored to make MCU debut as Spider-Gwen

Based on a recent update from Marvel insider account Marvel News (previously known as Film News), it’s been suggested that Emma Stone is discussing potential roles with Marvel Studios for both “Spider-Man 4” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. The role she might take on, according to the report, is Spider-Gwen – a variant of Gwen Stacy, a character previously played by Stone in Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man series.

As a diehard fan, I find myself pondering that if the upcoming movie indeed unfolds within the Multiverse Saga, it would certainly align with several compelling factors. For one, Spider-Man: No Way Home served as a game-changer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), bringing back two of the most cherished incarnations of our friendly neighborhood Spiderman. Moreover, Spidey’s multiversal linkage, stemming from his deep bond with the Spider-Verse, adds weight to this theory. Considering how the last film resurrected numerous legendary Spider-Man movie characters, it seems only fitting that its sequel might continue this trend by introducing more.

Dead Marvel favorite will reportedly return in Spider-Man 4

Emma Stone played Gwen Stacy in the 2012 film “The Amazing Spider-Man,” sharing the screen with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. She reprised her role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in 2014. The second movie wasn’t as warmly received as the first, but it became notorious for Gwen Stacy’s death, a comic book adaptation that didn’t sit well with audiences due to the strong bond between Stone and Garfield’s characters.

It has long been speculated whether the character would reappear as Spider-Gwen in a future film, but unfortunately, the third movie never materialized because Sony struck a deal with Marvel Studios to incorporate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Tom Holland was chosen for the role of the latest Spiderman. Even though Garfield came back to portray his version of the character in No Way Home, it strongly suggested that Gwen Stacy’s character remained deceased.

In a different comic book universe, there’s a character called Spider-Gwen. She first appeared in 2014, and her storylines are part of the Spider-Verse series. Spider-Gwen gained significant fame after playing a key role in the hit 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and its upcoming sequel in 2023, titled Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.

It’s clear that if Emma Stone returns to play Gwen Stacy in the MCU, it would be thrilling! She was an exceptional Gwen Stacy before, and this opportunity would allow her to portray a new side of the character while still preserving the appeal that made fans love her originally. Moreover, it would provide a more satisfying conclusion for her character compared to what happened in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
