NASCAR: 2024 Talladega playoff qualifying updates, full starting lineup
As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with over two decades of racing under my belt, I eagerly anticipate the YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway this Sunday! This race is always a wild card and full of unexpected twists and turns, much like my first date with my wife back in ’98.
This coming Sunday afternoon, the second race in the three-part series of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs’ qualifying round will be held at Talladega Superspeedway, following the opening event at Kansas Speedway earlier on.
The final leg of the 12-match series includes the YellaWood 500 on Sunday at the high-banked, 4.281-kilometer Lincoln oval in Alabama, which spans four turns and is known for its excitement. Additionally, there’s a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, often regarded as one of the most unpredictable events in the entire 10-race postseason.
As an ardent racing enthusiast, I must say, given Talladega’s status as a superspeedway, the traditional group qualifying approach is not applicable. Instead, the order for the individual qualifying sessions is established based on a four-factor metric that NASCAR has been employing since 2020. For a comprehensive understanding of this formula, you can find the details here.
Keep in mind that the 12 drivers still in the playoffs won’t be considered for the ranking until all other drivers have been placed first. This guarantees that these final drivers will secure their positions at the very end of the lineup.
In simpler terms, the top 10 fastest racers, regardless if they’re fighting for the championship or not, will all qualify for the second-round contest to determine who gets the starting position at the front of the grid.

As an ardent racing enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement as NBC is all set to broadcast the live action of the YellaWood 500 from Talladega Superspeedway this coming Sunday, October 6, starting at 2:00 p.m. ET. Last year’s winner, Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, went on to claim his first NASCAR Cup Series title after winning this race. However, it was 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick who triumphed at Talladega earlier in April. If you haven’t already, sign up for a free trial of FuboTV now to catch all the heart-pounding action!
