Rachel Zegler claps back against her Snow White critics

As a longtime fan of Disney movies, I have witnessed the evolution of their live-action adaptations over the years. From Cinderella to Aladdin, each film presents its unique challenges and opportunities for growth. The latest addition to this lineup is Rachel Zegler’s Snow White, and I must say, she has certainly faced a storm of criticism that could make even the toughest fairy tale heroine shiver!

Rachel Zelger is taking it to the critics of her new Snow White film and she’s not holding back!

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to admit that Disney’s live-action adaptations have truly made a splash in the past decade, despite some recent attempts falling a bit short. But nothing seems to be stirring as much buzz as the upcoming retelling of “Snow White.” Redoing Disney’s very first animated masterpiece is quite the gamble, especially given that the Snow White tale has been reimagined countless times over the years.

I’ve been finding it quite surprising, as a gamer, to see the strong reactions towards the Disney’s live-action remake of “Snow White.” Initially, people had issues with Rachel Zegler being cast as Snow White, given her Colombian heritage not entirely aligning with the traditional image of the heroine. Additionally, there were concerns about her age and vocal abilities. To make matters more heated, leaked on-set photos of what seemed to be a diverse group of dwarves sparked even more outrage.

Subsequently, the trailer received harsh criticism due to its poor visual effects, causing the release of the movie to be pushed back to 2025. Additionally, Zegler faced online backlash for her opinions about Snow not being a damsel in distress and comparing the Prince’s true love kiss to assault.

In an interview with Variety, the actress openly addressed the controversy and shared her feelings about it, while also maintaining that she stands by what she said.

In all honesty, it made me sad that it was taken in such a way, because I believe that women can do anything. But I also believe that they can do everything. I would never want to box someone in and say, ‘If you want love, then you can’t work.’ Or ‘If you want to work, then you can’t have a family.’ It’s not true. It’s never been true. It can be very upsetting when things get taken out of context or jokes don’t land.

After facing the harsh blowback, I was considering stepping away from social media, but I didn’t want to hand them the victory of seeing me affected. Taking a social media break gives them too much control over my emotions.” (First-person perspective as a gamer)

The controversy seems to be continuing even as the film prepares for its debut.

Zegler clarifies Snow’s name

One concern, as mentioned, is that Zegler doesn’t fit the description of Snow White from the fairy tale, whose name means “fair-skinned.” In an interview with Variety, she clarified that Disney is justifying this by connecting it to a different part of the story.

It fell back to another version of ‘Snow White’ that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby. And so the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One of the core points in our film for any young woman or young person is remembering how strong you actually are.

The Rise of Red” and told Variety that Zegler will be amazing in her role.

The movie might encounter pushback from fans of the beloved animated version and potential concerns about its quality. However, Zegler isn’t shying away from critics in this regard, which makes her a fitting choice for Snow White.

Snow White premieres in theaters March 21, 2025.
