OpenAI Canvas in ChatGPT: What is it and how does it work

As a seasoned tech enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that OpenAI’s latest offering, ChatGPT Canvas, has truly piqued my interest. Having witnessed the evolution of AI and its applications firsthand, I can confidently say that this new feature is a game-changer.

ChatpGPT Canvas is still in Beta.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve just discovered that OpenAI has introduced Canvas, an exciting new addition to ChatGPT! This innovative feature lets me edit and customize the AI’s responses right alongside them, giving me more control over the final output. It’s like having a co-pilot in our conversation, allowing me to fine-tune the interaction according to my preferences. This announcement comes after OpenAI secured a massive $6.6 billion funding round, solidifying their position in the tech industry based in San Francisco.

What is Open AI Canvas?

The ChatGPT system is excellent for delivering answers, but when content needs modifications and numerous revisions, it highlights one major limitation. Canvas intends to address this issue by enabling users to adjust and tailor the AI-generated response according to their preferences.

Using canvas, ChatGPT can more effectively grasp the intent of your request. By selecting certain areas, you clearly point out what you desire ChatGPT to concentrate on. Similar to an editor or code reviewer, it offers real-time feedback and suggestions while considering the overall project scope.

Users have the ability to directly make changes to text or code and can revert back to previous versions whenever necessary. If you’re uncertain about when or how to utilize Canvas, simply type ‘Open Canvas’ to access this new functionality. Additionally, ChatGPT will automatically open Canvas for you if it determines that any form of editing or modification may be required.

The OpenAI Canvas platform is currently utilizing the ChatGPT-40 model and has begun its release for ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers. As of now, it can only be used on desktop computers, with mobile users only having the ability to view the Canvas but not make any edits or modifications. Starting next week, Enterprise and educational users will gain access to this feature.

What can You do with ChatGPT Canvas?

Here’s a look at some early applications for customizing ChatGPT’s workspace, along with tips for tailoring the content to suit your preferences.

  • Suggest edits: ChatGPT offers inline suggestions and feedback.
  • Adjust the length: Edits the document length to be shorter or longer.
  • Change reading level: Adjusts the reading level, from Kindergarten to Graduate School.
  • Add final polish: Checks for grammar, clarity, and consistency.
  • Add emojis: Adds relevant emojis for emphasis and color.

You can use Canvas for regular queries, but it is also useful more so for coding and constant revisions to the code. Here are some ways ChatGPT Canvas would be useful while coding according to OpenAI.

  • Review code: ChatGPT provides inline suggestions to improve your code.
  • Add logs: Inserts print statements to help you debug and understand your code.
  • Add comments: Add comments to the code to make it easier to understand.
  • Fix bugs: Detects and rewrites problematic code to resolve errors.
  • Port to a language: Translates your code into JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP.

When does ChatGPT Canvas feature auto-launch in ChatGPT?

Users can easily ask Canvas to open whenever they want and utilize it hassle-free. However, ChatGPT might also automatically launch Canvas at appropriate times, requiring you to make adjustments or modify the results as needed. Though still in development, ChatGPT employs various techniques to optimize Canvas usage, such as distinguishing between essential actions.

A key challenge was defining when to trigger a canvas. We taught the model to open a canvas for prompts like “Write a blog post about the history of coffee beans” while avoiding over-triggering for general Q&A tasks like “Help me cook a new recipe for dinner.” For writing tasks, we prioritized improving “correct triggers” (at the expense of “correct non-triggers”), reaching 83% compared to a baseline zero-shot GPT-4o with prompted instructions.

Since Canvas is currently in beta, it’s expected that new feature updates may undergo numerous modifications. As ChatGPT continues to enhance its user interface, Artificial Intelligence remains a constant. Notably, Google recently unveiled the possibility for creators to utilize AI to produce video content on YouTube and YouTube Shorts.
