Why There Is a Court Battle Over This Beaver Being Released into the Wild
As a seasoned movie-goer and animal lover with years of experience watching films like “Free Willy” and “Bambi,” I find myself deeply drawn into the heartwarming yet perilous tale of Nibi, the two-year-old beaver who has won over thousands of admirers worldwide.
The internet sensation, a two-year-old beaver named Nibi, finds himself at the heart of a legal dispute.
For several years now, Nibi has been under the care of Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, ever since she was saved as a newborn. However, the rescue organization took legal action by filing an urgent injunction against the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife), after being instructed by the state office to free Nibi back into the wild.
The predicament arose when the rescue group submitted a request to MassWildlife for Nibi, seeking permission to use him as an educational beaver, enabling visits to schools and libraries. Unfortunately, their application was turned down, and MassWildlife insisted that Newhouse Wildlife Rescue should return the beaver to its natural habitat. This decision was shared by the rescue organization via a Facebook post.
Jane Newhouse, head of a rescue group, shared with the Associated Press that Nibi might find it tough to thrive if freed because she lacks the skills to construct dams or stockpile food for winter. Additionally, Newhouse expressed worry about how Nibi would behave around wild beavers as attempts to introduce her to others have not been successful.
Newhouse could not immediately be reached for comment.
On Tuesday, it was decided by the judge that Nibi will remain at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue until a complete hearing occurs.
The news arrived following a strong public demand, which included a petition on change.org aimed at safeguarding Nibi from any “unnecessary extraction.” This petition has amassed almost 30,000 signatures. Furthermore, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey pledged her commitment to protect Nibi, stating that the state would take all necessary measures for its preservation, as reported by NBC Boston.

On Wednesday, Newhouse shared a video of Nibi on the organization’s Facebook page, keeping dedicated followers informed about the current state of affairs regarding the beaver.
In the video, Newhouse stated, “Nibi is secure now,” and added, “I’m happy to inform you all that Nibi is thriving. She’s in perfect health, enjoying life to the fullest.
