'Rust' to premiere at Poland film festival, followed by panel about Halyna Hutchins

As a film enthusiast who has witnessed the highs and lows of Hollywood, it is truly heart-wrenching to see the tragic circumstances surrounding the production of “Rust.” Three years ago, we lost Halyna Hutchins, a promising cinematographer whose talent and passion for her craft were evident. It is deeply moving to learn that despite these unimaginable circumstances, the film she was working on will finally make its world premiere at Poland‘s EnergaCamerimage international film festival.

Three years following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust,” the film is now scheduled for its global debut in Europe.

On Thursday, it was revealed that the international film festival EnergaCamerimage, held in Poland, will be showing “Rust” and hosting a tribute panel for Hutchins. This event is scheduled to take place from November 16th to 23rd in Toruń.

On the New Mexico filming location of “Rust” in October 2021, Hutchins was employed. A prop gun fired by actor and producer Alec Baldwin accidentally discharged a bullet, which tragically struck and killed the 42-year-old cinematographer from Ukraine, and also wounded director Joel Souza.

Baldwin recently stood trial in New Mexico for involuntary manslaughter in connection with Hutchins’ death, but the case was dismissed amid a dispute over the special prosecutor’s handling of evidence. The actor had pleaded not guilty.

This week, a judge in New Mexico declined a plea for Hannah Gutierrez’s early release from prison. As the armorer for the movie “Rust”, Gutierrez was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and received an 18-month sentence. Despite her claim that she loaded Alec Baldwin’s gun with what she thought were harmless dummy rounds, unbeknownst to her, a live bullet was in the chamber.

Following the “Rust” preview, EnergaCamerimage will organize a panel with Souza, along with Stephen Lighthill, one of Hutchins’ instructors, and the cinematographer who completed the movie, Bianca Cline.

As a follower, I’m anticipating that we’ll delve into the methods used by the filmmakers to bring the project to life while preserving Hutchins’ creative vision, even after her unfortunate demise. Additionally, the discourse is expected to touch upon the significance of women in cinematography and underscore the importance of prioritizing safety on set.

Based on the festival’s announcement, it was proposed by Hutchins that they should submit their film to EnergaCamerimage – a festival dedicated to the craft of cinematography – at an early point in the making of “Rust.

Festival director Marek Zydowicz stated, “We recognized that this event was significant to her, and she felt comfortable surrounded by cinematographers from around the globe who have been attending Camerimage for over three decades.

At the festival, we paid tribute to Halyna by observing a moment of quiet reflection and a discussion about set safety led by cinematographers. Later on, we’ll join hands with fellow cinematographers and movie lovers for another heartfelt remembrance of her.
