Rebecca Ferguson & Andrew Garfield’s New Fantasy Epic Based On 87-Year-Old Classic Series Debuts To Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Critics are already loving the new film starring Andrew Garfield and Rebecca Ferguson, called The Magic Faraway Tree.

This new fantasy movie is based on the beloved book series The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton, which was originally published between 1939 and 1951. Starring Claire Foy and Nicola Coughlan, the film follows a British family who move to the countryside and discover a magical tree that takes them to a fantastical world, helping them reconnect with each other.

Despite only having 16 reviews, the new movie The Magic Faraway Tree has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are calling this fantasy adaptation a charming and unique family film with positive messages that address how technology impacts us today. Garfield and Foy deliver strong emotional performances, and Coughlan is receiving praise for her delightfully quirky acting.

While the movie isn’t quite as charming as films like Paddington and Wonka, and the villain could be more developed, most critics agree it’s a fun and lighthearted adventure perfect for families, especially with its PG rating. That earlier series, Enid Blyton’s Enchanted Lands, featured ten-minute animated episodes shown on Children’s BBC and CBBC on Choice. It doesn’t have a score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has a high rating of 8.4 on IMDb. Other Blyton books that have been adapted for the screen include the Noddy series from 1998, Malory Towers from 2020, and various versions of The Famous Five.

The movie The Magic Faraway Tree is now playing in select cinemas in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. As of now, there are no plans to release it in the United States, and it’s unclear if it will be shown in theaters here or become available online.

Ben Gregor directed The Magic Faraway Tree, and Simon Farnaby wrote the screenplay. Farnaby also co-wrote the recent Paddington films and Wonka alongside Paul King. Pippa Harris, Nicholas Brown, Danny Perkins, and Jane Hooks produced the movie.
