Sabrina Carpenter says she was 'led astray' during early career in candid new interview

As I read about Sabrina Carpenter‘s meteoric rise to stardom, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for this young, talented artist. Her journey from struggling to break into the pop culture lexicon to topping charts in 18 countries is truly inspiring.

Sabrina Carpenter is basking in the triumph of her recently released studio album, titled “Short n’ Sweet,” as well as the three hit singles that have propelled her to chart-topping heights.

Although she is only 25 years old, her path hasn’t been a rapid ascent to fame, given that she has already put out six albums since 2015 and continues to advance in her acting career.

Recently, in an interview with Time magazine for their TIME100 Next list, which highlights 100 rising leaders influencing the world’s future, the individual from Quakertown, Pennsylvania, opened up about her challenging journey following a record deal with Disney’s Hollywood Records at the age of 12.

For quite some time, I found myself both guided and misguided, explained the carpenter. However, I am deeply thankful for all those instances when I was steered off course, as they have greatly prepared me for situations requiring me to rely on my own judgment.

She didn’t achieve her major acting milestone until a year later, securing the part of Maya Hart in Girl Meets World (2014-2017), a revival of the popular 90s show Boy Meets World.

The 2024 TIME100 Next list is live now on Time.com and the new issue will hit newsstands on Friday, October 4.

For her cover photo on Time’s Next List, the multi-talented artist poses in a stylish red bodysuit and matching bow tie while aboard a train – a bold and chic look that truly captures her essence.

In keeping with my commitment to timeless elegance, I donned a chic black-and-white checkered dress with delicate black lace accents for the occasion. My golden tresses cascaded down in voluminous waves, framed by fringy bangs that added an extra touch of sophistication to my look for both photographs.

Between 2015 and 2019, the carpenter put out four studio albums under Hollywood Records, a label owned by Disney. During this period, they also starred in various Disney productions such as Adventures In Babysitting (2016), The Hate U Give (2018), Tall Girl (2019), and The Short History of the Long Road (2019).

However, she hadn’t managed to penetrate the mainstream as a musical artist up until then, but that appeared to be shifting with her transition to Island Records in 2021. This move resulted in the release of her solo single, Skin, which represented her first appearance on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

After that, she released her debut album titled “Emails I Can’t Send” (2022), in collaboration with her new label Island Records the next year as part of the promotional strategy. The album featured five singles: Skinny Dipping, Fast Times, Vicious, Because I Liked A Boy, and Nonsense.

Following positive feedback from critics, the album managed to rank within the top 30 on charts in countries like the United States, Argentina, Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

In simpler terms, Carpenter stated that her recent album, Emails I Can’t Send, carries a somber tone and is a more refined expression compared to her previous works.

The success she reaped from all her hard work writing, recording, and performing really seemed to pay off with the response to her most recent album: Short n’ Sweet (2024).

Referencing the poignant influence of Carpenter’s most fleeting romantic encounters, coupled with her petite stature and the compact duration of the album, she herself has labeled it her second “grown-up” album, after its unveiling on August 23rd.

Using three individual songs, it has since achieved number one on chart rankings in eighteen countries, such as the United States, Australia, and France.

For Carpenter, “Espresso” was her initial chart-topper in the UK, whereas “Please Please Please” holds the title as her first number one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Over time, the album climbed up the Billboard 200 charts to reach the top position, and it was later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This achievement provided her with the long-sought commercial success that she had been striving for over many years.

Working with Taylor Swift on various tracks for the Short n’ Sweet album, Jack Antonoff, recognized by many as her collaborator, has observed her growth in the process.

The musician and producer shared with Time that they have been closely observing Sabrina’s work, noting its continuous refinement. Essentially, they implied that Sabrina hasn’t made any mistakes; instead, she simply needed to persevere, which, in their view, is the essence of being an artist.

She expressed that there were numerous dreams I had as a child that I was able to accomplish this year, which felt like a delightful, satisfying moment for my past self, as if I were checking something off of my bucket list. When I discovered I’d be on SNL, I was so excited that I almost vomited – though I don’t wish to be too descriptive about it.

At the MTV VMAs in New York in September, yet another cherished milestone from Carpenter’s bucket list was fulfilled through her outstanding performance.

She shared, “I spent my childhood years admiring those performances, thinking to myself, ‘I want to be part of that.’ However, it didn’t feel unattainable so much as it felt like it wasn’t the right time according to the timeline I had set in my mind.

Despite initially finding it challenging to make a mark in popular culture, the actress from “On My Way” ultimately grew both personally and professionally, coming to appreciate the benefits of the way her journey transpired.

She openly admitted that she feels well-prepared for these moments. If she was just 17 or 18 years old, she believes she would have been incredibly anxious and overwhelmed, given her path to success alongside artists like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, and many others.

When queried about another life experience that might elicit such a strong emotional reaction that she’d get overly excited to the point of vomiting if it were announced, Carpenter replied: “Performing at the Grammys would be my dream event.

Right now, she’s traveling for a concert tour in promotion of her album titled “Short n’ Sweet”. The tour kicked off in Columbus, Ohio on September 23rd, and she’ll be performing in Hartford, Connecticut on Wednesday, October 2nd next.

Her initial arena tour extended across several regions of the United States and Canada, wrapping up on November 18 with two performances at the KIA Forum located in Inglewood, a district of Los Angeles.
