Honestly, I’m so fed up with Netflix and other streaming platforms constantly raising prices – it feels like they think we all have endless money! That’s why I’m really excited about the rise of free streaming services that actually offer good stuff to watch. Pluto TV, in particular, is getting a lot of buzz, and I can see why – it’s a great alternative when you’re tired of paying through the nose.
As a total cinema lover, it’s wild to see how things are shaking out in the streaming world. While Netflix is getting playfully roasted – even by free services like Tubi – for another price increase in early 2026, Pluto TV is quietly winning me over by just adding more and more stuff to watch, and without hitting my wallet every month. It’s a really interesting contrast, honestly.
I’m really excited about Sin City finally coming to Pluto TV in April! It’s based on the awesome comic books, and I’ve been waiting for a chance to watch it. I’m glad it’s finally happening!
What Did Sin City Do Right?
The first Sin City movie came out in 2005 and featured a fantastic cast, including Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Elijah Wood, and Benicio Del Toro, among others.
Okay, so imagine a movie that feels like flipping through the pages of a really dark, stylish comic book. That’s what we’ve got here. It’s told through these interwoven stories, with a shadowy salesman (Josh Hartnett) guiding us. We follow this incredibly rough vigilante, Marv (Rourke), desperately searching for a woman named Goldie (Jaime King). Then there’s this really compelling subplot with a tough-as-nails cop, John Hartigan (Willis), who’s up against a truly awful child killer (Nick Stahl). And finally, we’ve got this heartbreaking story of an ex-prostitute (Brittany Murphy) trying to break free, with a little help from her new guy, Dwight (Clive Owen), who seems genuinely determined to save her.
Frank Miller’s Sin City was a hit with both critics and audiences when it was released. Critics gave it a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers slightly preferred it, awarding it 78% based on over 25,000 reviews.
What Went Wrong with Sin City 2?
After the success of the movie Sin City in 2005, a sequel seemed inevitable. Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For finally arrived in 2014, but it wasn’t as well-received as the first film, even though the original creator aimed to make it even more intense.
The sequel didn’t receive positive reviews, scoring below 50% on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences. Many felt it didn’t capture the same energy and strong narrative that made the first film so successful, with one reviewer pointing out it wasn’t as powerfully impactful as Sin City.
I have to admit, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For really didn’t do well in theaters. It only made about $13.8 million in the US, but it cost around $65 million to make! That’s less than half of what the first Sin City movie earned domestically, and it cost a whole lot more – about one and a half times as much – to produce.
Plans for a third Sin City movie were canceled after the initial film’s release, but the first movie remains a great watch, and is now available to stream for free on Pluto TV.
