Should Sam Kirk become a major role on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

As a devoted Trekkie with years of Starfleet-worthy dedication to the galaxy far, far away, I must admit that the introduction of Captain Kirk’s brother Sam aboard the Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been a delightful surprise. However, like any good Starfleet officer, I can’t help but scrutinize the finer details.

In Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain Kirk’s brother, Sam Kirk, wasn’t a significant character. Viewers didn’t know much about him, and when we first encountered him, he was already dead. However, in the new series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Sam Kirk, portrayed by Dan Jeannotte, is on board the Enterprise. Since Captain Kirk’s brother, Lt. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley), is part of the recurring cast, they do appear together in some scenes. But, is this all we can expect for their relationship?

As a dedicated Star Trek gamer, I can’t help but notice the slight deviations from canonical lore in the new series, Strange New Worlds. For instance, there was never any mention of Sam serving aboard the Enterprise, which already bends the rules a bit. To make matters more intriguing, according to Operation Annihilate! script notes, this Sam is supposed to be at least ten years younger than Captain Kirk, yet in Strange New Worlds, he’s a lower-ranking lieutenant.

It seems that the creators of The Original Series didn’t find it necessary to introduce Kirk’s brother, choosing instead to exclude him from the story. However, in Strange New Worlds, his character has been reintroduced. Will he just serve as a foil for Kirk when needed or is his role set to expand and become more significant?

Could it be possible for the popular series ‘Strange New Worlds’ to create an episode featuring a significant on-screen team-up between the Kirk brothers, given that John Orquiola, one of my favorite Screenrant writers, has proposed this idea? If Sam Kirk doesn’t have a substantial role in the main storyline, would they craft an episode that provides him with ample screen time to share action sequences with his brother?

In the new series “Strange New Worlds,” not centering around James Kirk suggests that Sam may not receive much additional screen time beyond what he’s already had. Nevertheless, it’s been enjoyable watching the brothers share the screen.
