Unsolved Mysteries EP Terry Dunn Meurer reveals which case is ‘most baffling’ ever from new volume (EXCLUSIVE)
As a seasoned true-crime enthusiast with a keen eye for intriguing stories, I must say, Terry Dunn Meurer has certainly piqued my interest with her insights into the world of unsolved mysteries. Her extensive experience in the field is evident as she navigates through the labyrinth of cases that remain unresolved, yet ripe with potential for resolution.
Reports of bizarre cattle mutilations stretch as far back as 1606, but it’s the gruesome and unsettling nature of these tales that may surprise many. This topic is recently explored in depth in the latest edition of Unsolved Mysteries, now streaming on Netflix.
Frequently, these cattle are discovered with seemingly professional cuts and missing parts like tongues and reproductive organs. Over time, numerous explanations have been proposed, ranging from the plausible to the outlandish – for instance, aliens abducting cows using UFOs for experimental purposes, Satanic groups, serial killers, or even a clandestine government project utilizing these animals for top-secret tests. Yet, despite all speculation, we remain without a clear resolution.
I correctly guessed it might be the third episode, “Mysterious Mutilations,” simply because I had never realized just how gruesome and widespread the mutilations have been over time.
That’s the one. How bizarrely specific to lose the body parts that are actually carved off in such a similar way for four, five decades now. It’s like, they talk about one of the theories is a cult, but if it were a cult, you’d have to pass that down to other cult members. It is really the first mystery that the strongest theory I have is UFOs, which sounds crazy to say, or hear me say, coming out of my mouth. But I do believe in UFOs, and I don’t have any other explanation for it. It’s not just in Eastern Oregon. Our episode focuses on Eastern Oregon, but this goes on—there were some in Texas, there have been some in Colorado. It is really a mystery, about who is doing this and why.
Additionally, during our conversation, we touched on various topics including Meurer’s thoughts on the unsolved mysteries surrounding the Roswell incident, her expectations for future developments in the Netflix series, and, of course, the baffling phenomenon of cattle mutilations.
1428 ELM: It appears that this season is delving a tad deeper into the realms of the supernatural and aliens compared to previous seasons. Typically, only one paranormal or alien-related episode has been included in past volumes, but this time, the focus seems to be slightly heavier on that theme.
TERRY DUNN MEURER: To begin with this season, we released five episodes in July and four more since then. The arrangement of the lineup has resulted in a series that might seem quite focused on paranormal events. However, I view the mysterious cow mutilations as a true crime case rather than something supernatural. In other words, it’s essentially a crime involving cattle instead of humans. Therefore, it appears to me that we have two distinct stories unfolding, and we felt it was important to revisit the Roswell incident. This is because there are many people who may not be fully aware of all the details surrounding Roswell, beyond its general recognition. We were eager to explore the testimonies of witnesses who came forward after the initial event.
In our July episodes, we delved into some familiar territories by revisiting old cases like the Mothman and Roswell incidents. This means going back to the initial tales we shared in our classic episodes. Our viewers can revisit these episodes to understand the original narratives. We strive for balance in our content. Typically, we produce a set of episodes with a focus on true crime, but we also include one paranormal case like you mentioned. The goal is to provide a mix and keep the audience engaged by presenting new mysteries that continue to unfold on Unsolved Mysteries.
1428 ELM: What made you decide that now was the right time to go back to Roswell?
TERRY DUNN MEURER: Initially, we had two individuals, Kevin Randle and Donald Schmitt, on our show who have dedicated their lives to investigating the Roswell incident. Their research has been extensive, yet it hasn’t received much public attention. We wanted to provide them an opportunity to share their latest findings. They have spent countless hours interviewing witnesses related to the case and uncovered some intriguing information.
1428 ELM: I recalled mentioning earlier that I had a suspicion the decapitated head case in Volume 4, just prior to this, might be solvable. Has there been any progress or new information on this matter since then?
TERRY DUNN MEURER (PARAPHRASING): We’ve received numerous leads concerning this matter, and so have law enforcement agencies. We pass on our leads to them. Recently, I received an update from them regarding some leads they are currently investigating. However, the case remains unsolved at this point. That’s one of the aspects about such cases, particularly murder cases – they don’t get resolved promptly.
If someone spots a wanted fugitive or a missing person, identifying them could quickly lead to a resolution. However, when it comes to murder cases, tips are passed on to the authorities who often prefer to keep their investigations discreet until they make an arrest. For example, in the case of the park bench, we’ll pass on many leads to them, but we may not know which ones could potentially solve the case or not.
1428 ELM: As a dedicated gamer, have there been any mysteries or unsolved cases in the Netflix series that left me scratching my head and wondering if they’ll ever be deciphered?
TERRY DUNN MEURER: The unsolved case that seems the most solvable is Tammy Williams from volume 3 of “Body in Bags.” It’s a high-profile case, with Tammy on the run. All the cases we want to solve, I think, people assume they’ll be found given Netflix’s wide reach, but it’s possible that those involved become aware of their upcoming appearance and go into hiding.
In certain situations, I believe there are cases that remain unsolved but could potentially be if people revisit some of the previous ones after watching this group. They might recognize details like “Tammy lives in Tampa, Florida,” and someone might then come forward with information. A case is always open to being solved.
1428 ELM: Concerning the Don and Becky episode, I must admit my skepticism, but I’m genuinely intrigued about how you handle paranormal tales. How do you determine if a story is worthy vs. one that seems too weak? What guidelines do you follow?
Ultimately, the reliability of the individuals we feature is crucial, and for the episode featuring Don, we took extra care to understand him well first, ensuring it was substantial enough to warrant an entire episode’s focus.
Through Steve Mera’s detailed account, we get a glimpse into his personal journey regarding Becky’s relationship with Don. Initially doubtful of Don, Steve eventually became a strong supporter, sharing his own emotional investment in the situation. Without Steve Mera’s credible perspective in the paranormal investigation field, our understanding might have been more tentative. Essentially, we are following the story through Steve’s point of view.
As an ardent fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the potential return of the show. Are there specific episodes or themes that you might explore should it continue?
Sure thing! “Indeed, we’re working on new storylines for the upcoming season, but I’m not able to share anything about them at this time. However, my response to your question is affirmative.
All four episodes of Unsolved Mysteries volume 5 are now streaming on Netflix.
