Rapper Rich Homie Quan died of an accidental drug overdose, Atlanta coroner confirms

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the lives of artists through documentaries and biopics, I find myself deeply saddened by the untimely death of Rich Homie Quan. His talent and contributions to the hip-hop scene, particularly Atlanta’s vibrant music scene, will be sorely missed.

Rich Homie Quan, a notable Atlanta rapper who significantly contributed to the local hip-hop scene, tragically passed away in September due to a fatal mix of fentanyl, alprazolam (commonly known as Xanax), codeine, and promethazine. This unfortunate event was confirmed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office to The Times.

The medical examiner announced on Wednesday that the death of rapper Rich Homie Quan, aged 33, who was known for his unique “Lifestyle” and “Type of Way” tracks, was determined to be an accident. This unfortunate event occurred in Atlanta on September 5th, his hometown.

Approximately a month later, the medical examiner’s office revealed the reasons behind the rapper’s demise. They had previously announced on September 6th that they had conducted an autopsy, with the results being delayed until all necessary lab tests were completed and microscopic evaluations of tissue samples were done.

According to a 911 call made public by local news station 11 Alive in Atlanta, it was reported that Rich Homie Quan’s girlfriend, Amber Williams, claimed she found him unresponsive before his passing at Grady Memorial Hospital. In the recording, Williams is heard asking for an ambulance to be sent to the scene.

She states in the recording, ‘He didn’t move at all. I can’t detect a pulse or signs of breathing,’ and also mentions that ‘His mouth seemed to froth a bit.’

Earlier this month, when rumors about the demise of Rich Homie Quan circulated, various hip-hop musicians such as Playboi Carti, Boosie Badazz, and Quavo from Migos expressed their tributes through social media platforms.

In my critique, I’d say: “Always remember your charming smile, the unique way you spoke, and of course, your captivating music.” (Boosie penned this on platform X, formerly known as Twitter.)

Rich Homie Quan was recognized for his collaborations with a variety of artists, such as Young Thug and Tyga. Additionally, he has teamed up with other prominent rappers like Yo Gotti, Fetty Wap, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, and Nicki Minaj ā€“ all of whom have worked with the artist famously known for “Flex”.

The day following the demise of the rapper, his father Corey Lamar expressed his grief over his son on Instagram, stating that he was enduring “indescribable sorrow.

Elder Lamar pleaded repeatedly for help in comprehending his situation on Instagram. ‘Lord, I beg you, let this be a dream,’ he said. ‘My son, my firstborn, my closest friend – Lord, have mercy on us all. Please offer your prayers for me and my family.’

He added: ā€œI feel like Iā€™m crushed into a million pieces.ā€

On September 17th, Rich Homie Quan’s local community in Atlanta gathered in large numbers for a heartfelt memorial service held in South Fulton, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta. The ceremony included emotional recollections from the rapper’s parents, a touching tribute by fellow Atlanta hip-hop artist Michael “Killer Mike” Render, and heartfelt tributes paid by Rich Homie Quan’s own children.

A few days following the funeral, Williams expressed on Instagram that the loss of her boyfriend was the most challenging ordeal she had experienced, leaving her feeling as if her heart had been wrenched from her body.

In my own words, as a film critic, I’d rephrase it as: “I am heartbroken and torn apart šŸ•ŠļøšŸ’”šŸ˜¢. No one can dictate how I should mourn or heal from this loss. All I seek is tranquility; you always said ‘until death do us part’, but this separation came far too prematurely.

Around a month following the passing of Rich Homie Quan, a fresh track titled “Song Cry” surfaced on Monday. Over a mellow trap rhythm, he opens up, expressing feelings of emotional concealment and seeking solace within his music.

He raps, ‘I feel so overwhelmed in my thoughts, I’m unsure of the cause, but when on stage, I become timid.’ Wearing sunglasses helps him conceal his nervousness.
