As a dedicated fan of NCIS: Hawaii, I can confidently say that the Season 3 DVD release is like a sunrise over Waikiki – beautiful, exciting, and a little bittersweet. While CBS may have cancelled the show, we fans refuse to accept this as “The Final Season.” Instead, let’s call it the “Almost-but-not-really Final Season.

The DVD for Season 3 of “NCIS: Hawaii” will be available starting Tuesday, October 8. Though CBS has decided to end the series, we, the fans, won’t give up hope. Therefore, I prefer not to label it as “The Final Season.

The boxset contains approximately 28 minutes of additional content, along with the complete collection of Season 3’s 10 terrific episodes. By now, you should be well-acquainted with the structure of these episodes, so there’s no need for further review.

Here’s one way to rephrase it: Each disc holds a portion of the episodes. You’ll find the first four episodes on Disc 1, followed by three more episodes on Disc 2. Finally, you can find the last two episodes of the season on Disc 3.

My one main issue with the NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 DVD boxset

Sure thing! Actually, there’s one aspect of the DVD boxset that I find troubling – how the bonus features are divided. I thought it would be best to bring it up right away, as it’s the point I have the most concern about.

In this particular release, the bonuses are divided into three distinct parts: a comedic outtakes collection (the gag reel), an exploration of the third season (a featurette), and a behind-the-scenes peek at Daniela Ruah directing episodes for both NCIS: Los Angeles and Hawaii. Ideally, I’d prefer to have all these bonus features compiled on a single disc, but unfortunately, that’s not how this specific version is set up.

On Disc 2, you’ll find Ruah’s special feature, while the additional bonus contents are located on Disc 3. However, due to its placement, Ruah’s feature might be overlooked since it’s not a standalone extra but rather found within her directed episode. For clarity, it would be more convenient if all the bonus features were grouped together on one disc instead of being scattered across two. So, don’t forget to check out Ruah’s special content hidden in her episode!

The bonus featurettes are a great look at behind-the-scenes

“Among the extras on the Season 3 DVD of NCIS: Hawaii, my favorite is the blooper reel. It’s great fun to see the main cast from the original series get highlighted. In one scene, Vanessa Lachey seems to have some trouble drawing her gun from its holster, and this causes everyone else to burst out laughing.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate the opportunity to witness the delightful camaraderie of the NCIS: Hawaii cast beyond the screen. It’s crucial to showcase this aspect because it breaks the longstanding stereotype about main casts not getting along. The bond between them is evident from their interactions on social media, and that harmony shines brightly in the gag reel.

As a devoted fan, I must express how captivating it was to witness the behind-the-scenes featurette on Ruah, who brought her unique touch as director to an episode. With her extensive experience leading her own NCIS series, she offered a distinctive perspective on Hawaii that other guest directors might not have had. Alex Tarrant shares some heartwarming insights about working with Ruah in this role, and I highly recommend watching the featurette for these very reasons alone.

The behind-the-scenes segment concentrates on the role of Sam Hana in Season 3. Given that it seems this was produced prior to the show’s cancellation, I can understand why there’s such a strong focus on Sam. One particularly interesting aspect is how Sam assisted Whistler’s character development, notably boosting her confidence. Watching the dynamic between the green FBI agent and the experienced NCIS agent was enjoyable, as it provided insight into how Sam would aid Whistler. Therefore, delving into the behind-the-scenes details was quite significant.

I’m just yearning for a retrospective segment encompassing the entire series, given that it’s supposedly the last season. It would have been delightful to see the cast reunite and discuss what made the show and its characters so special. They could share their thoughts on the unique atmosphere of the series, the lessons learned, and perhaps even sneak in some hidden gems for fans. After all, other shows bid farewell in style; why not this one too?

NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 is on DVD on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
