As an ardent follower and admirer of sports, I find myself utterly captivated by the remarkable journey of Tiana Penitani. Her resilience, talent, and grace are truly inspiring, and her story is one that resonates deeply with me.
She is up for ‘captain of the year’ at the 2024 Dally M Awards on Wednesday evening.
Without a doubt, Tiana Penitani, captain of the Cronulla Sharks, truly caught everyone’s attention at the most esteemed event of the NRL, which took place at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse.
The NRLW star showed off her ripped body in a $1,760 pink leather dress by American designer Rick Owens.
Penitani is one of the best backline players in the league.
Over the past 28 years, this individual has consistently shown incredible strength on both the wing and center positions for New South Wales (NSW), Australia, and the National Rugby League Women’s (NRLW) competition. When they gain momentum, it becomes almost impossible to halt their progress.
In 2013, she was the youngest Australian to participate for the country in either a rugby union or rugby sevens World Cup at only 17 years old. However, a severe knee injury prevented her from donning the green and gold uniform at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
A family tragedy when she was young helped shape her into the mentally tough player she is today.
She told Daily Mail Australia last year, “I attribute much of who I am today to my mother and the manner in which she brought us up. The moral and ethical principles she subtly ingrained in us from an early age are significant.
The challenging experience I had as a young athlete significantly molded me by emphasizing the value of resilience. Since I was confronted with adversity and endured hardship at an early age, there was nowhere to escape or avoid it. Instead, I had to tackle it head-on.
“In my opinion, I’ve approached both my playing career and sports life by being resilient, fearless, and always ready to face challenges directly.
‘And at the end of the day, I’ve been through some really dark times with my family and nothing, nothing will ever really compare to that.
Over time, I’ve gained valuable insights about myself… What I can honestly boast about is my resilience, a trait I’m incredibly proud of. Furthermore, I take pride in the fact that these life experiences have been instrumental in shaping my professional journey.
Designated as the first female captain for Cronulla’s NRLW team over esteemed players like Emma Tonegato, Quincy Dodd, Venessa Foliaki, and Hollie Wheeler, it’s clear that her leadership skills are held in high esteem.
Always by her side is her husband Aaron Gray, a former NRL player who represented both the Rabbitohs and the Sharks. They’ve been a couple for approximately eleven years.
For a woman who openly admits she’s quite energetic, Penitani praises Gray for consistently helping her stay grounded.
It’s quite an achievement for her, being both a Skin Care Specialist and frequently appearing on Fox League broadcasts.
Penitani stated that Gray is wonderful and has inspired him slightly to pause, as Gray understands that if I exhaust myself, it’s not just physical fatigue but a significant mental strain,” is one possible paraphrase for the original statement.

Following my departure from Rugby Sevens in 2019, I found myself joining the esteemed Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team of Cronulla, a move that coincided with Gray’s tenure there.
