Tobin Bell confirms he will return for Saw XI: 'John Kramer is not done'

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror franchises that span decades, I can confidently say that the Saw series has been a thrilling ride since its inception. The news of Tobin Bell’s return as John Kramer in the upcoming eleventh film is like hearing the chilling sound of a trap being triggered – exhilarating and nerve-wracking at once.

John Kramer’s story is still unfolding, according to actor Tobin Bell in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, and there’s yet more to discover about him.

As a dedicated fan of the Saw franchise, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the next installment, and now hearing that Cary Elwes will reprise his role in the eleventh film only solidifies my excitement. The Saw series has been a regular fixture since the 2004 movie kick-started it all, but it was with Saw X that critics really started to appreciate these films. A big part of that shift in perception is undeniably due to Elwes’ exceptional performances throughout.

One significant error in the franchise was ending John’s life prematurely, which compelled the writers to come up with complex time-travel devices to maintain his character’s presence. John, being the true architect of the Jigsaw murders and the essence of the series, had to continue appearing, either through clever plotting or flashbacks.

2023 marked the release of the tenth film in the Saw series, titled “Saw X”. This movie served as an intriguing interquel between “Saw” and “Saw II”, reintroducing the significant character Amanda Young, played by Shawnee Smith. By doing so, it opened a fresh perspective for the franchise’s ongoing storyline. Ultimately, it emphasized what keeps fans captivated year after year – the enigmatic John Kramer and his intricate moral dilemmas.

Indeed, while there are fans who enjoy the growing violence in traps, many of the queries that Bell receives from fans during interviews with the likes of Carlos Aguilar from the LA Times tend to focus on the profound ethical dilemmas.

Although Bell clearly disapproves of John’s perspective, he can empathize with the origins of his global outlook.

John feels that the world has been taken over by mediocre people. He believes we all have to deal with the consequences of what we create. And that these people are not appreciative of what they have.

The movie featuring X portrayed success by offering an intimate exploration of John’s psychological landscape. This film stood out from others due to its intense focus on John, making him the central figure. In this production, we uncover the tragic story where John was deceived by a group of individuals into believing they could heal his terminal brain tumor. However, as the plot unfolds, it is revealed that their intentions were deceitful and the entire operation was a fraud.

In the tenth movie, they smartly kept the character played by Synnøve Macody Lund, Cecilia Pederson, alive. This character could become a captivating opponent for John and Amanda in ‘Saw XI’, although her participation in the eleventh film hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

Previously, writer Marcus Dunstan labeled the upcoming “Saw” movie as a passionate film carrying fresh ideas, and undoubtedly, should Bell’s character, John, be the focal point once more, we can only eagerly anticipate, holding our breath in suspense.

Is there a possibility Bell ever feels confined by his character as a meticulous serial killer? His response could catch you off guard. He doesn’t worry about being stereotyped and instead views it as an opportunity to craft a profound acting experience, one that may potentially alter the viewers’ perspective of him.

The 82 year old actor genuinely seems to enjoy peeling back John’s many layers.

Each film is a different story and John’s in a different place. Same guy but different circumstances.

We cannot wait to see what Bell and the writers cook up for Saw XI.

Saw XI is currently set to release theatrically on September 26, 2025.
