As a lifelong fan of musical theater and a dedicated follower of Ariana Grande’s career since her Nickelodeon days, I must say that seeing her grace the cover of Vanity Fair alongside Cynthia Erivo is nothing short of exhilarating! The two starlets embody their roles as Glinda and Elphaba with an undeniable charm and charisma that is sure to enchant audiences.

Ariana Grande delivered a stunning performance, donning various outfits, while appearing alongside her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo on the cover of Vanity Fair’s November edition.

The pair of rising actresses will portray unconventional companions Glinda and Elphaba in the eagerly awaited screen version of the 2003 stage production of the musical.

For one of the cover features in the magazine, Ariana, aged 31, gracefully posed while wearing a stunning, pale-blue satin dress that included black satin gloves and intricate bow details, making up one out of the three unique covers for this particular issue.

Previously known Nickelodeon actress adopted a style reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe as she donned a stylish, white midi dress for a photo shoot with her costar Cynthia, who opted for a bold black-and-white ensemble.

Stepping up for yet another stunning shot during our photoshoot, I couldn’t help but feel my heart race as I admired Cynthia, resplendent in a daringly low-cut, fiery red feathered jacket, and a pair of captivating glasses that perfectly complemented her vibrant ensemble.

As I stepped into the spotlight, I found myself a world away from the cheerful Glinda I portrayed on screen. This time, I donned an elegant black lace dress, painting a contrast to my usual sunny disposition.

As an over-the-moon admirer, I’d express it this way: When Cynthia graced the stage for her solo performance, she was resplendent in a captivating dark green off-shoulder gown that accentuated every curve. To complete the look, she donned a sleek black hat and a glittering gold headpiece.

In the magazine interview that followed, Ariana openly discussed the persistent comments about her changing vocal tone, implying that she believes she would not have faced the same level of criticism if she were a male artist.

Back in June, the singer took fans by surprise when she switched between two unique voices while discussing her past and time at Nickelodeon on Penn Badgley’s podcast, Podcrushed.

As an over-the-moon fanatic, one video in particular sent shockwaves through the social media sphere, capturing Ariana gracefully slipping into a deeper, raspier tone during a candid instant. However, just as swiftly, she raised her pitch to a significantly higher note.

In response to the uproar, Ariana explained: ‘Some regions may not be accustomed to the efforts involved in altering one’s voice, be it for singing, adopting a new accent for a role, or creating a character voice for a project.’

Ariana stated that when a male actor performs a role, it’s often praised and acclaimed, with humor sometimes included. However, she noted, this praise usually comes first: “Look at how immersed he was in the role,” and such reactions are simply part of the acting profession.

She pointed out that the struggles faced by women in this field are long-standing and well-known. They often encounter unique challenges, such as being scrutinized more closely than their male counterparts.

In that moment, Ariana addressed the criticism, explaining that one reason for her high-pitched tone was because she’d grown accustomed to using it while playing Glinda in Wicked.

She clarified in her TikTok comment that it’s a matter of habit (something she has been doing consistently for the past two years) as well as maintaining good vocal health.

She frequently adjusts her pitch (going high or low) based on the amount of singing she’s doing, she explained, followed by a weeping emoji to express emotion.

‘I’ve always done this BYE,’ she added to abruptly end the speculation.

Without directly stating it, fans hypothesized that Ariana may have opted for her higher pitch to sidestep using the vocal fry – a slightly gravelly tone often heard in low, relaxed speech tones – as some believe this habit could potentially strain one’s vocal cords or singing voice.

For this month’s issue of Vanity Fair, Ariana and Cynthia are featured on the cover, with their upcoming Wicked movie set to be released on November 22.

In the forthcoming two-part movie version of a popular Broadway musical, Ariana will portray Glinda The Good Witch, whereas Cynthia takes on the role of Elphaba Thropp, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West. (Jon M. Chu’s upcoming dual film adaptation of a successful Broadway play, Ariana plays Glinda The Good Witch, while Cynthia stars as Elphaba Thropp, The Wicked Witch Of The West)

Elphaba is a young lady with an uncommon green complexion, often misjudged, as she’s still exploring the depth of her hidden abilities. On the other hand, Glinda is a celebrated young woman, blessed with privilege and aspirations for greatness, yet to uncover the sincerity within her heart.

The sequel to the first film, which was released in November this year, is planned for a November 26, 2025 release.
