The Rings of Power DP reveals that the [SPOILER] will return in the season 2 finale

As a seasoned gamer and long-time Tolkien enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate the climactic season 2 finale of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” With questions swirling about Eregion’s fate, Nori’s reunion with the Stranger, and the impending arrival of the monstrous balrog, this week promises to be a rollercoaster ride for fans.

This week, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video is set to broadcast its season 2 finale. Many questions are left unanswered, such as: What’s next for the elven city of Eregion? Will the Stranger find Nori in the desert realm of Rhûn? And will the ominous balrog from the series finally emerge in the mines of Khazad-dûm?

Cinematographer Alex Disenhof may have let the cat out of the bag for at least one of those when speaking with Jonatan Blomberg from MovieZine about his favorite scene from the finale. Beware SPOILERS below:

I love the balrog sequence in 8. When you read something like that on the page, your first reaction is, ‘How are we going to pull this one off?’ And then you just break it down, you work with all the different departments, and it was this huge collaboration. We built this huge, 40-foot tall light that would kind of go up and down with fire effects so you could kind of get the scale of the balrog as it was lower and then it comes up and comes down, so the actors could play off that. It’s also a very emotional scene. It’s not just this cool set piece.

In the upcoming episode, Disenhof doesn’t give specific details about the balrog’s role in the finale, but it’s clear that the fearsome creature lurking beneath the dwarven mountain will make an appearance once more. If you had been guessing this already due to the show’s hints about something sinister approaching, then your suspicions have now been confirmed.

In the latest installment of this “Lord of the Rings” prequel series, I find myself as King Durin IV, ensnared by the allure of a new ring imbued with power. Despite the warnings from other characters about something malevolent lurking beneath, my curiosity and greed lead me to dig deeper into the mine. Little do I know that what lies ahead is the balrog, an ancient monster once serving under Morgoth, Sauron’s superior, who went into hiding after his boss was defeated. It’s eerie to think that this very same balrog will cross paths with Gandalf in the original “Lord of the Rings” story, thousands of years from now. It looks like it has quite a journey ahead of it.

The adventure might kick off in the final episode of season 2, airing on Thursday, October 3. Given that, it seems we might have a significant gap before The Rings of Power’s season 3. So, let’s enjoy these moments as they come.
